Orlando recommendations near the parks

I'm in Orlando one more day for training and what I've learned is that Orlando is a vast food wasteland. Everything I've seen here is least common denominator type stuff (steakhouses, seafood, chain restaurants), at least near the parks, so I really am at my wits end about where to go to find something that Orlando has that no one else does. The hotel actually recommended Olive Garden when we asked for somewhere good to eat the other day. I keep thinking that we might not be far enough north for a good Cuban place, but there's none I've found near the Mouse.
Any suggestions?

there is no good food near the parks. you need to expand your travel area. For italian i would suggest terramia, or christini's. the best steak in town is at del frisco's

The people who I'm with are not going to travel away from here, and I really don't want to eat alone on the last day of the conference.

Try Victoria and Alberts at the Grand Floridian

Oh, don't think that I didn't try to convince my colleagues to hit that place up. That's EXACTLY where I wanted to eat, but these are people that would never spend a lot for a good meal. I was hoping to find something good that was in a price range they wouldn't crap themselves over.

Orlando is a vast food wasteland
quote:That's excusable in Florida, but this happened to me at an upscale resort in Puerto Vallarta. We wanted to get off the beach property and see the city, so I asked the concierge where to get a knock your socks off and unique dining experience. She recommended only one restaurant - Outback.
The hotel actually recommended Olive Garden
Can't help you with Orlando because when I'm there, I'm at the mercy of my folks who insist on treating me to everything, so we end up at places like crappy buffets because they have a fifty cent coupon.

If you get really homesick, visit Emeri's at CityWalk, Universal.

Untrue
OP, try Shula's or Todd English Bluee Zoo at the Swan & Dolphin hotel and resort between Epcot and Hollywood Studios
Blue Zoo
Shula's
If you want to go to Downtown Disney, Wolfgang Puck (not cafe or express) is pretty good and House of Blues has a late night Happy Hour with great prices from 10 pm to close ($3 domestics, $3.75 imports)

Thanks for the tips guys. North was definitely the wrong direction there, Degas. I didn't realize there was a Shula's here. May try to steer that direction.
