I'm not a "shooting enthusiast" or real knowledgable on ballistics and the technical stuff on bullets so I'm sure some folks here can help.

When you sight your rifle in, what distance or distances, do you shoot?

Shot my .280 and 45-70 this weekend at 50 yards. Both on so don't think I'll be off by much at 100 or 150 yrds

Really gotta take a look at the ballistic data for your particular weight bullet and pick a distance that you think is where most of your shots will be. The major ammo makers have published data on their websites.

That buffalo cutter has a lot of drop, but the .280 should not be off much more than 1.5"

If you are going to shoot that 45-70 gvt well you need to see what it does at different ranges. Target shooters can shoot those things around 6-800 yards with tang sight, but they are very familliar with what the load they shoot does.

I shot my 45-70 at 50 yards and it was an inch high. May have been me or may have been the gun but me and my shoulder decided it was good enough.

Depends on what you distance you could actually be shooting at in the field.

If you are dead on at 50, you are probably going to be low at a 100, and even more at 200 and beyond. I don't know anything about the ballistics of the cartridge though.

Depending on what rifle I am using, I generally am 2" high at a 100 which put me pretty close to dead on at about 200 and then some.

If I remember right the 45/70 drops drastically at 100 yards. I think its about 5 inches

I've heard they drop a lot past 150. Shot a hog and deer last year at between 80 and 100. Hit both so imagine I'm good to go for this season.

<150 yds, you're good to go. I shot a pig with one from 145 it was a low shot, but still drilled his arse.

All depends on what you want your zero to be. I sight my .270 and my sons 7mm-08 to be dead on at 200 yds. That puts me at about 1.25-1.5 inches high at 100 yds. So each year we set up a bench on the lease and shoot at 100 yds to confirm still on. We have several areas where we may have a 200+ yd shot. really dont make an adjustment for 100 yds, just aim for vitals and throw lead downrange. For my 30-30 and black powder, dead on at 100 because the areas I hunt with those I dont have more than a 100 yd shot max. That works for us.

Zero my 30.06 and 7 mag in at 25 yards then back out to a hundred and usually they both are 1.5-2 inches high. This hasn't failed me but my longest shot is about 250 when hunting

That is pretty much exactly how i have my two go to rifles setup. .270 is dead on at 200 and the 45-70 is dead on at 100.
