Thinking about buying a deer rifle in the future.

I haven't been deer hunting since I was a kid when my dad would bring me, but I would like to have the option for when duck season sucks. I shot my dads .243 Remington 700, I believe. What would be a nice rifle to look into, but won't break the bank (if there is such thing)?

You can get some of the combos for pretty cheap. I mean it wont be the best scope but it is better than paying a whole lot when starting out. Remington and Mossberg makes them for around 330 I believe.

We need a budget to work off of. Remington model 700 is $379, tikka T3 is around $600 give or take $50, savage makes a nice rifle also. If you looking for cheap the cheapest I would go would be the 700 for $379.99. I would also look for a used rifle to maybe get a better quality gun.

is 243 a good caliber? I know I have dropped a deer with it, but I was like 10. This will probably start a shite show, but what caliber should I look at?

A well placed shot from just about any .22 caliber centerfire rifle will drop a deer. This is why the law is set the way it is.

It's a perfectly fine caliber. However, I'd go with something a little larger (unless you were a woman or a kid). I shoot a .270. 30-06 is a fine choice. Of course everything would depend on where you hunt and how far of a shot you plan to make.

If your'e going cheap I would go with Savage Arms Axis
My little brother bought one and I love it. If your'e deer hunting I would recommend the .270, 30-06 or 25-06.
I've been an advocate of the 30-06 my entire life but I got this 25-06 a month ago. And it's hands down the funnest gun I've ever shot. I put 4 rounds through it the other day at 100 yards and I could have covered up the holes with a quarter.

Savage 308 hog hunter, xps or other picatinny rail scope mount, sight mark 4x16x44, weaver rings.

It's good but .270 is probably a better bet. 30-06 is by far the most versatile of the more common options.

Sheer number of bullet weights and styles available. Does everything .308 Win can do and then some more at both ends of the scale.

.243 is fine for deer. I actually just purchased a sako in .243 for my all around varmint and whitetail gun. I'm just waiting on the funds for a new scope for it.
If I was buying my first deer rifle I would go bigger than .243.
It doesn't matter which caliber to get but some good ones are(in my best bubba gump voice)

Pretty much any bullet from .24 cal and up will be just fine. Some may be faster, flatter or heavier but you don't need to worry about that until you have a safe full of guns and are trying to buy something you don't have
