Ridiculous Markup at Pelicans Store

Not sure how many have noticed this, but the prices being charged by the Pelicans team store are outrageously overpriced, and not in the way that all official gear is overpriced. I mean that the Pelicans are charging well over what the NBA itself charges for the exact same product. A t-shirt I saw at the Arena last night for $44 is only $27 on nbastore.com. Jersey prices are $105/$140/$350(!) for Replica/Swingman/Authentic, compared to $70/$110/$250 from the NBA. I checked the team stores of both the Kings and the Rockets and neither team store had markups like this. The Kings prices were actually cheaper than nbastore.com, and the Rockets were right in line with it. I also purposely only checked prices for new players for both teams, to make sure they weren't discounted for being older.

Anybody have any idea why the team is allowed to get away with this garbage? Unfortunately this is nothing new, and took place at least since the "creole blue" unis came out a few years ago. In the past I was annoyed but simply bought ALL of my gear from the NBA, however there are currently zero Pelicans jerseys available on nbastore.com (besides that disgusting "fashion" jersey), and Pelicans fans would be forced to pay up to 30% more than any other fan in the league. If this keeps bugging me I may attempt to reach out to someone with the team/store. Any help would be appreciated. Thoughts?

The same management company that manages the Saints team store also manages the Pelicans team store.

I have the GM's card in my office, but I'm not about to put his info on blast.

You should be able to get his contact info by contacting one of the team stores directly.

Good luck dealing with their customer service. It is downright awful.

It's most definitely bullshite. I'm with you. I would have to guess it's just because everything's new. We're new, the jerseys are new, etc. They think they can profit from the increase in purchases. I'm not sure they have the demand to charge THAT much, but if the NBA Store doesn't have ANY jerseys, they may just be forcing us to pay up if we want to be "true fans" and have team jerseys.

I'd chalk it up to that, but like I said, this is not a new practice. The jersey/gear prices were still around 30-40% higher last year even when everyone knew we were changing names after the season. Replica Davis/Rivers jerseys were over $100 during last season.

Prices are different at the arena too or at least the swingman jerseys were last night. 110 for the swingman at the store but 140 on pelicans.com

Isn't stuff you buy at any arena always more than what you can get anywhere else?

I mean, arenas are where you spend $8.00 for some nachos.

It's incredibly strange. Given the fact that the Pelicans are way behind the Saints in terms of popularity, it would stand to reason that items in the team store should be priced very competitively - if not lower - than the store on NBA.com in order to push their new brand out around the city. A lot of this stuff isn't just value added for the consumer; it's advertising for the seller as well. I may make it a point to look into this issue.

That was a replica for $110, unless I missed one. I looked at quite a few, and all of the replicas were the same price. I didn't actually see any Swingmans(men?) except of the ones that were on mannequins, and they were $140. Swingman jerseys have the thin, "real" shoulder parts. The replicas have the wide squared off ones.

The prices are the same on the store's website.

The Saints Team Store has always been awesome to me. Of course, I try to go when they're slow and not 30 minutes before kickoff.

Maybe you're just an a-hole?

I can't speak to the level of service at the HorneCans team store. I've never bought anything from there - too expensive.

Awesome. It'd probably be easier for you to get anywhere anyway. I sent this to 42 as well. Wait, I am not supposed to know who you are on here, "NOLATX"? Ha.

Haha, click on my profile. I'm not hiding anything. Just had to change my user name because it was GeauxHornets before.

So, the closer it is to kickoff, the worse they can treat their customers?

A lot of this can be blamed on Adidas running the team store.

Normally I would agree with you, but most of the other teams in the League are in the same country and none of the ones I have checked (Kings, Rockets, Knicks, Lakers, Pacers, Bobcats) practice this, so it certainly not a normal thing for the NBA.

The Pelicans, Nets and two other teams all have stores run by Adidas. I assume that they can do this because they're not worried about losing money on product that doesn't move.

Under the old regime, whomever ran the store would buy the product from a wholesaler. Anything that didn't sell, they would have to sell on clearance or sell back to wholesaler at ridiculously cheap price. They would lose money.

Adidas doesn't have to worry about buying from a wholesale market. If the product doesn't sell, they can easily sell it to Marshall's or TJ Maxx at a price that still covers the cost and still gain a profit.
