With stars teaming up for the sake of having a winning team, I don't see your point. It would have been crazy 20 years ago for star players to team up. They wanted their "own" team.
And the league is less one on one now than it has been in I don't even know how long.
Defense has picked up considerably.
The league is in a great place right now.
Early 2000's I would agree with you. But now? It's completely different and a million times better.

Agreed. Especially on the WC game. Seems silly to play enough series for 162 games and then decide who advances in the wild card round based on one game

Winning isn’t interesting. Flawed, but talented, losers are. It is far better to follow a team or an athlete that doesn’t quite win. A) they are usually more interesting and B) less likely to be a total sociopath. Think of the person in your life who only cares about winning. Chances are good you think he’s a total a-hole.
In that vein, Dr. J over Jordan, Phil over Tiger, McEnroe over Sampras, Peyton over Brady, and Bonds over anyone. Give me guys who are entertaining. Lots of people win. Be interesting instead.
Athletes are too afraid of endorsement dollars to ever say anything marginally interesting. Which is why the only interesting athletes tend to be hockey players (no endorsement money). Shattenkirk is one of my favorite players in sports because he has no filter, and seems like a decent guy.
I prefer the old anarchic bowls over a playoff, but prefer a playoff to the BCS, which is the worst of all possible worlds.
The NFL and NBA have better players, but both are boring as watching paint dry. Give me college. The flaws make it interesting.
I like smaller sports like hockey, cycling, college baseball, and lacrosse because I don’t have to listen to the media. ESPN will ruin those sports. Stay away.
I love soccer but soccer fans are, as a group, intolerable douchebags. Watching soccer doesn’t make you a better person, it just means you like a different sport.
I grew up reading Bill James and then Baseball Prospectus. I’ve been in on the statistical approach to sports for three decades now and the reason it hasn’t achieved as widespread acceptance, other than people being oddly proud of their own profound ignorance, is that stat guys can never admit when they are wrong. It’s like I have to agree with 100% of the menu to be on the team. WAR is a shitty, shitty stat that is practically worthless. It doesn’t help that the second generation of stathead writers can’t write for shite. It’s not like analysis has gotten worse, but the writing has. And the writing matters.
LSU fans have become entitled crybabies. You lost your first game in four years to an unranked team. Deal. It's not that big of a deal, in the grand scheme of things. The sky is not falling, you entitled cry baby.

Well, that would mean something if I said, "Manning wasn't great." But that's not what I said.
There's a difference between "execution" and everyone claiming it's Manning's mental acumen and games which make him great.
People have been spouting Manning is some genius at the line and running this complex offense. - It simply ISN'T TRUE.
