I saw it on Thursday on an Imax 3D. I'm happy I did, but I'm also happy it didn't last beyond an hour and a half. The graphics were impressive, but they really weren't enough to hold this movie together for much longer than that: the story was a bit ridiculous.

I'm sort of surprised at how it's rated on IMDB... 8.7... which ranks it among the very best of all time, which seems a bit absurd because everybody in our group expressed that it's very unlikely they'd ever watch it again, even on DVD.

watching it on a regular tv would be worthless

There's that, and then there's a very non-compelling story. It's no Shawshank Redemption, to be sure, where even though you know the ending you can't help but witness it unfolding over and over again.

Does a movie have to be re-watchable to be considered best of all-time?

I saw it twice in the span of a week.

That would be a good topic for discussion. I say yes, but others might disagree.

Yes. Would you rate any other art GOAT if you could only view it/hear it once with enjoyment?

How highly rated was The Passion of the Christ? I am glad I watched it, but I do not have two viewings of that movie in me.

I'm surprised anyone would do that willingly.

Yea but movies like Passion and Requiem for a Dream are only watched once by a lot of people because the story is hard to digest, but still good.

I haven't seen Gravity but sounds like people would only watch it once because the movie looks great in theaters but the story is meh.

Sounds similar to Avatar imo.

It received an A- Cinemascore and made nearly $45 million at the box office this weekend after making $55 million at the box office last weekend.

People are going back to see this movie and are encouraging their friends to come with them. It has made $200 million worldwide as of this evening. Obviously some people differ with your opinion.

A- on CinemaScore is nothing to get excited about. Anyone can go on and score it. Hell most movies get at least a B+ on there.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Fast Five each have As on CinemaScore.

Shouldn't that prove that the movie is overrated and not all that great?

I mean if the biggest draw about a movie is seeing the awesome effects on a massive screen and in 3D, but the story, acting, dialogue, etc. are so bland that you it's not even worth watching at home...how good is the movie in the first place?

Absolutely not. I never want to see Requiem for a Dream ever again, and I consider it one of the greatest films ever. It just gutted me and I don't think I can do it again. Maybe when Mowgli grows up and wants to watch it.

What do you mean again? I've never seen it the first time.

It is certainly one of my criteria - it is why I give the edge to Casablanca over Citizen Kane, for example, among the classics. I've probably seen Casablanca 15 times, Citizen Kane, 4 or 5.

There was nothing extraordinary about the cinematography of Casablanca - from a technical and visual standpoint, Citizen Kane is much better, bolder and original. But the acting, story and characters make Casablanca more re-watchable.

My top 10 - Casablanca, Some Like it Hot, Patton, Bladerunner, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption, Godfather, The Wrath of Khan, and The Empire Strikes Back, are all very re-watchable.
