Looks like a copperhead to me. And, 5$ says you didn't step on it, you weren't wearing socks and you know that it is a copperhead. Just posting a pic with the story hoping to get a reaction.

I find it unbelievable that a person living in the south does not know what a copper looks like. Aside from the rattlesnake they are probably the easiest snake to identify.
