Just watched a segment on this game. They showed video of the Pats putting two defenders at the line to hold up Gonzales much like punt return teams double up the gunner. In this case they aim to hold up and keep Graham within the 5 yards so its legal. This might be mostly a red zone defense to take JG out of the play.

To take Sproles out they showed video where the RDE for the Pats stopped his rush on the QB to take a shot at the RB coming out for the wheel route/pass in flat. . As soon as the RB regained his balance he was then knocked on his arse by the LBer assigned to the RB effectively eliminating the RB from the play.

I expect to see some of this Sunday. If NFL live can see it, I'm sure Payton already has a plan for it.

Jets tried to do the same thing to Tony G and was called for two flags in the red zone.

So they're going to knock down/hold Sproles, Graham & PT on the same play?

Good luck with all that.

So 2 guys jamming Jimmy, and 2 guys on Sproles? It's 9 on 7 after that, I like those odds.

The problem that the Jets had was that they looked like offensive linemen against Tony G which necessitated the holding calls. I have seen this done to Jimmy G by the Dolphins and instead of blockinghim the simpley hit him with the corner and while he was off balance the LB nailed him sending him to the turf. It can be done a couple of times but will stop very quickly if they get called for a penalty or Brees makes them pay with another reciever, such as with the Dolphins

That was exactly NFL Live's collective response: who will they leave uncovered to do that? ....and good luck!

I'm sure if it were that easy we would have been stopped years ago

CSP has a plan... We won't be stopped.

Good thing the pats arent the Jets then it was very effective against the falcons. It wasnt an all the time thing, it was just mixed in really well situationally.

Im sure Bill has something but it probably wont be a carbon copy of the Falcons gameplan. Off the top of my head i Wouldnt be suprised to see the Pats put in DE sub rushers inside at DT to pressure Brees where it matters (up the middle. Did this a lot last year with Cunningham and had some success. You take a hit with the running defense but our current DT situation isnt that much better off with Kelly and Wilfork out, and the running game certainly isnt yalls strong suit

Should be fun to see two of the best minds in football go head to head

No, both of those strategies are used situationally and usually separate from each other.

It is legal within 5 yards. They assumed the penalty was on the two guys jamming Gonzales, but the ref called it on a defender not on Gonzo.

People act like Sproles and Graham are our only weapon. Colston is still here, Ben Watson has been steady, and Stills/Toon/Meach have shown flashes. Not to mention Brees distributing the ball, but I guess they want to try to force Brees into his sometimes bad mistakes

If their defense moves out of position to bump grham strokes, Brees will torch them especially with moore

Everything mentioned here has been tried at different times by different teams and the end result is the same, 5-0. As others have said, too many weapons.
Lastly, Payton is smarter than Matt Patricia (for Christ sake, the guy has woman's name. How tough can he be!!!).
