Looking at this old program is looks like some players didn't have them. Any reason?

That's back in the day when tear-away jerseys were still legal. Looks like QB's and WR's have no stripes on them in the pic, so maybe those are tear-aways.

Varsity letterman maybe? Not sure either

Is that the orange throwing game or the fog game? Or were those one in the same?
Tear-aways, I think you're correct.

I'm not sure, way before my time.

They were one in the same, but in 1982.

Thanks. I was there and I bet you couldn't buy an orange within a 20 mile radius of BR.

Somebody at UniWatch would probably know.
But the tearaway thing sounds possible

It was tear-away jerseys... Single stiched, cotton jerseys with no hems or bats. There are several pics of Charles Alexander running with a defensive player with a handful of jersey, ripping it away.
Also in this photo - The only LSU QB to start at QB in a Super Bowl!

Well if you look at the pic closely looks like players with lower #'s had the stripeless jerseys. Were these perhaps kickers that didn't need tear away? And why would they design tear away jerseys differently with stripes and non tear away without ?

Nah not kickers. David Woodley the Qb is the last guy out the tunnel in that pic.

Even the pros used tear-aways for a few years.

This program was from the infamous game with FSU we lost and then when Bobby Bowden made decision to not come coach Tigers, was it not? I know was a day game and changed the course of Tiger FB history!

This. Didn't seem so odd at the time, but it does now.

The whole game is on youtube if you've got a couple hours to spare. Pretty neat, that wrestler Ron Simmons is on the starting dline for FSU.

quote:The "Tear Aways" were treated with a special chemical that made the material weak. The "No Stripes" on some jerseys were strictly an Equipment Manager screw up. He plain and simply didn't order enough of the regular "UCLA Shoulder Insert" jerseys and the solid white were all he had in the equipment room.

Yeah, cool old video classic game we came up short with Hokie and co.I just graduated that summer. The USC loss just took the steam out from them, and later the 0-3 loss to Gumps! Didn't recall they still painted the other teams EZ in 79!
