Update: Bucs' Johnthan Banks diagnosed w/ MSRA; NFLPA may advise canceling game

quote:

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, yet another Buccaneers player has been diagnosed with a MRSA infection.

The potent bacteria already has ended the season of kicker Lawrence Tynes. Likewise, it was reported on Thursday that the infection has returned to the foot of guard Carl Nicks.

quote:

Until then, Stroud reports that Nicks, receiver Mike Williams, and cornerback Johnthan Banks are not present at practice. It’s possible that Williams or Banks is the latest player with MRSA. Williams previously was on the injury report this week with a hamstring problem; Banks was not mentioned.

Trey Wingo is saying he thinks they shouldn't play the game because the disease is transfered by skin-to-skin contact. What say the MSB?

ETA: @AdamSchefter: NFLPA tells @wingoz that, depending on what MRSA containment report says, the NFLPA could advise Bucs-Eagles not to play this weekend.

Bucs franchise is a shite show. They should just fold it in for the year.

If this continues, they'll have no choice. It would be tough to play a game with 20 to 30 players.

Get the CDC in there for Christ's sake.

Basically a drug-resistant staph infection.

I think it's similar or related to a Staph infection

MRSA is methicillin resistant staph aureus. Basically a staph infection. I'd guess at least 10% of the population these days are carriers (bacteria lives in their nares) but don't have infections.

Any time someone comes into the ER with a "spider bite", it's usually MRSA.

MRSA is generally easily treatable.

From Wiki:
quote:

In the United States, there have been increasing numbers of reports of outbreaks of MRSA colonization and infection through skin contact in locker rooms and gyms, even among healthy populations. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine linked MRSA to the abrasions caused by artificial turf. Three studies by the Texas State Department of Health found that the infection rate among football players was 16 times the national average. In October 2006, a high school football player was temporarily paralyzed from MRSA-infected turf burns. His infection returned in January 2007 and required three surgeries to remove infected tissue, as well as three weeks of hospital stay.

Yeah, usually bactrim will take care of it (or if not then IV vancomycin). Not sure why the media wants to make this out to be a super-resistant flesh eating bacteria.

Wrestling mats are also a source ripe with MRSA. It basically needs a break in the skin for a port of entry. It's not surpising that a few players on a team get infected.

MSRA

From what I know, it is a staph infection that is very resistant to drugs, so it is hard to get rid of. A coworker of mine had an implant in her neck that would send signals to her brain when she would get migranes. She got MSRA when she had the surgery and had a hell of a time getting rid of it. She passed away in 09. Apparently she fell and broke her neck. I remember getting the call. I still think about her. She was a little older than me, but a great lady. Felt bad cause she had a lot of health issues. She helped me out a lot when my mom first got cancer. She was someone I was able to talk to about it.

Sorry for the rambling.
