Redskins Name Change? Really?

Trying to figure out what board to post this on, I guess since B. Hussein Obama uttered his stupidity, this is a good place.

All the BS going on in Washington, the US and the world and someone gives a shite about this? It's a nickname of a sports team, a not very good sports team. It just doesn't mean a damn thing. If you are lathered up about this congratulations, you have a worry free life.

I have spoken to some NA's about this, they don't care for the name, but basically they have real problems to deal with, this gets a shoulder shrug.

the boat is taking on water and the Prez playing with himself. Move on, save the angst for the real world.

I hope they don't change it, but i fail to see the connection between this and the government.

it's a bigoted name. Would the Boston Blackskins or the New York Kikes be ok? frick no.

Chiefs, Braves, Seminoles and even Indians are different because those mascots celebrate the bravery of the Native American warrior. Redskin is a slur, plain and simple.

To what do you base the notion that the name is bigoted? Blackskins has never actually been historically used and kike is clearly only used as a pejorative. So your comparisons are not valid nor equivalent.

So please provide actual historical substantiation for your point, not some faux equivalencies.

Seminole was an indian nation. The word Seminole is a corruption of cimarrón, a Spanish term for "runaway" or "wild one." How does that word celebrate the bravery of the Native American warrior?

Because the name doesn't reference a positive trait or position (Braves or Chiefs) nor even a neutral description (Indians or Seminoles) but instead is entirely reliant on a description of a particular skin color, which in this country (rightly or wrongly, depending on your perspective) is seen by the vast majority as a bigoted position to sit from.

If an nfl team named itself the fighting micks, I'd have no problem with it. I know some "native American" Redskins fans, so it must not be aol that terrible.

If you really can't see the difference between Braves and Redskins, I don't know what to tell you. You're beyond help.

I bet you shoveled snow uphill both ways just to get to and from school back in the day.

I know a lot of natives, none that I know of are offended. Probably liberal white women poking the fire.

This was from 2004

LINK

quote:

Most American Indians say that calling Washington’s professional football team the “Redskins”
does not bother them, the University of Pennsylvania’s National Annenberg Election Survey
shows.

Ninety percent of Indians took that position, while 9 percent said they found the name
“offensive.” One percent had no answer. The margin of sampling error for those findings was
plus or minus two percentage points.

I'm sure y'all have managed to convince a few more since then to be offended.

Rick Reilly had a piece about this recently. He used the Annanberg poll.

LINK

quote:

Too late. White America has spoken. You aren't offended, so we'll be offended for you.

Same story with the Red Mesa (Ariz.) High School Redskins. They wear the name with fierce pride. They absolutely don't see it as an insult. But what do they know? The student body is only 99.3 percent Native American.

And even though an Annenberg Public Policy Center poll found that 90 percent of Native Americans were not offended by the Redskins name, and even though linguists say the "redskins" word was first used by Native Americans themselves, and even though nobody on the Blackfeet side of my wife's family has ever had someone insult them with the word "redskin," it doesn't matter. There's no stopping a wave of PC-ness when it gets rolling.

Being offended is something whites spread to minorities. Too bad y'all think they can't live without being protected by your PC

Right, because Redskins isn't a neutral descriptor.

quote:

That's not an argument for it actually being bigoted, that's an explanation of why YOU, personally, perceive it that way. Your perception is not reality. Give me Redskins in its historical context and usage and tell me why it is derogatory.

Seriously, reread that argument again and tell me how you think that isn't bull shite. Rightly or wrongly depending on your perspective?

I'm not losing sleep over it but I'm not a Native American and even I'm offended by it a little.

Yeah, and you don't even know why or whether you actually should be. It's pathetic.

Pretty typical white liberal problem. Then, you have to convince natives to be offended.

I know exactly why and I've already explained it multiple times in this thread. Sorry you can't read.

They have a poll out showing that 90% of Native Americans "don't find the name Redskin offensive".
