I don't consider showing up in NYC for a couple shows at MSG "following the band around the country".

What about seeing them in Maryland, Illinois, Colorado, New Jersey, Virginia, and then showing up at MSG?

Maybe not the multiple shows, but I'd be willing to bet that more than a few 12 year-old girls have pouted until their family vacation got rerouted to one of his concerts.

It is no secret that The Grateful Dead had/has the strongest following by any touring musical act. Phish's fans are right behind them. Even the lower tier jam bands like Disco Biscuits, Widespread Panic, etc... have hordes of people following them around the country.

What causes this? One of the bigger differences between jam bands and a normal band (in a live setting) is that jam bands utilize a unique setlist every show, while "normal" bands stick with the same setlist throughout an entire tour. This explains why someone would see a jam band multiple times on a single tour, but there has to be more to the puzzle.

Why do jam bands have the best fans?

Rave culture is bigger.

You haven't given away/been given a ticket to a Phish show?

No. Most shows I go to are high demand. I'm sure I could probably score a lawn ticket for free, but I like to be in the pav.

Oh man. What a nightmare that would be.

Kids we are going to the Bahamas this spring break. What that? The Biebs isn't playing the Bahamas? Ok then, we are going to Carbondale Illinois.

Rave culture consists of one DJ being popular for a few months before being replaced by another as "the #1 DJ in the world." I admit that scene has fervent fans but it is never truly attached to one certain artist.

OK

Didn't you say you like to do heroin every once in a while? You should probably check out some Phish shows from 2004.

Please explain how the fact that I used a certain drug 15 years ago is relevant to how you suck at liking Phish.

No worries.... Most people who dig on Phish kinda suck. They certainly aren't as cool as the 90's folks.

No, it hasn't attached to one artist, but I think that people go to raves and jam band fests for similar reasons. It's as much about the culture as it is the music.

I disagree. I think it's mostly about the music and people just like to enjoy themselves while listening to it.

They are pretty much the same thing now that all this electronic crap is crowding the good fests.

With respect to Panic, what the hell else would their fans be doing? Honestly.

Have you been to a rave? The candy raver girl outfit isn't evidence of somebody just rolling up to a show because they like the music.

I'm not saying the people don't like the music..of course they do. But the scene is certainly part of the popularity.
