Great post. This is why this movie works for me on every level and deserves comparison to 2001. While 2001 was more about the human spirit, I'd say that Gravity was more about the spirit of life itself. It's all about the struggle to survive and evolving of the spirit that allowed life on our planet to thrive. The film works for me on every level.

I was kind of annoyed with it when I left the theater; but now the more I think about it the more it grows on me. (to the wonder)
I probably won't see Gravity again and I think my 8/10 is generous. As much as I enjoyed the viewing experience, it just seems shallow; the dialogue was poor.

I would have preferred minimalism, honestly. Talking to herself, "praying", girl named Ryan, etc.... It was all too cliche for a movie that was pushing boundaries elsewhere.

I don't know. When people are alone and scared they do tend to talk to themselves. Also, many non-religious people will pray, even if for the first time, when they are faced with death. I got nothing for the girl named Ryan, other than I know a girl named Ryan.

It wasn't bad; it just wasn't anything special (script-wise). Can you imagine Clooney's remake of Solyaris with the visuals and effects of Gravity? That would have been something special. In 20 years when technology has changed the movies and the viewing experience and Gravity, like the vast majority of films, becomes outdated--what will be said of the rest of the movie? I'm not saying it survived purely on aesthetics, it just didn't do anything as great as it did the eye-candy routine. It's a dead-centered median between something like Avatar on one side and 2001 on the other. It was by no means stupid, but it left a lot to be desired.
I think Cuarón did better with Children of Men.

Saw it last night. I wasn't blown away. It was great special effects but as an all around film, I feel like it fell flat in a few key areas. Character development, backstory and the desire to root for the protagonist, some others. I'm a screenwriter by hobby so I tend to pick movies apart a little more. I think it was more of a 3d experience than a true film.

I saw it this afternoon. It was the first time that I have seen a 3d movie in quite some time. As is the consensus it is a very pretty movie, and I'm glad I got the experience. That medium just doesn't do a whole hell of a lot for me.
Good use of characters. The simplistic characters and themes fit the use of cinematography to make for a great compact experience. Making the characters more complex or developed would have only served as a distraction. It was a great ride.
I'll give it a 7/10. While I am glad that I had the experience, it just isn't the type of thing that I would fall in love with. I typically fall in love with movies that are a bit more cerebral. For that reason, I just really can't see comparing it with 2001 at all.
