from a financial standpoint, or a cultural impact standpoint.

im going to have to go with the financial standpoint.
Sean Connery turning down the roll of Gandalf, and as a result missing out on $450 million dollars.

quote:

Talk about hindsight being 20/20. Sean Connery, as we all have known, was the first actor offered the role of Gandalf in THE LORD OF THE RINGS. He was offered $10 million per movie and yet he turned it down because he "didn't understand the script". For $10 million, I would recite dialogue in Swahili. That is a ton of money.

But, apparently the $10 million was not the final offer. Celebrity NetWorth reports that Connery was also offered 15% of the gross for all three LORD OF THE RINGS movies. Those films have grossed three billion dollars to date. That means in total, Sean Connery could have made $450 million dollars! That doesn't even include if he had returned for THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and the upcoming sequels.

$450 million!

what do yall think was a roll that someone turned down that was a huge mistake.

also I think Will Smith turning down Django was a mistake on his part, but not that big of one, he is a solid actor with more money than he knows what to do, but I think that roll could have put him in another catagory

ETA: sorry its been a while, forgot about how harsh yall are on mess ups

Katie Holmes turning down TDK to star in "Mad Money"

Though I'm glad she didn't return, liked Maggie G better.

I think I saw a Tarantino interview saying that Will Smith didn't turn it down but that QT didn't think Smith fit the role very well.

Agreed, Rickman was perfect casting for that role. Can't even begin to imagine anyone else playing Snape.

The most unrealistic thing in that movie is that there were two guys that could nail any chick on the planet, but were both hung up on a frumpy chick with a face that aged at twice the normal rate.

I dont hate Connery for it. Dude has made his money, and is ready to hang it up. Theres a lot to be said for walking away.

I think Gene Hackman turned down every good male role (appropriate to his age) during the 80's.
