As the NCAA faces the greatest existential peril in its history and scrambles for fundamental reforms by next summer, its power brokers are floating a radical solution for saving college sports: expanding professional sports.

NCAA president Mark Emmert recently raised the idea of allowing athletes to go pro straight out of high school instead of effectively forcing them to attend college. NFL rules currently require football players to wait three years after graduating high school, and the NBA restricts draft eligibility to those who are 19 and one year removed from high school.

Last week, Big Ten Conference commissioner Jim Delany echoed Emmert: "Why is it our job to be minor leagues for professional sports?" he said.

Other commissioners of major conferences offered their support in interviews this week with The Wall Street Journal. Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby said he was "in complete agreement" with those statements. "I don't think it makes any sense to force kids to go to college who don't want an education," he said.

There is no comparison between 18 yr. olds and 21-22 yr olds. For a league that is so concerned about safety, the NFL would have to be huge hypocrites to allow kids to go to the NFL straight out of HS.

this is either a move to try and get money from the pros, or the most pointless bullshite PR move in modern sports history

Players of out high school would die in the NFL.

It's a different kind of sport than baseball or basketball.

I don't think its as radical as it sounds because I can't see NFL teams signing 17 and 18 year olds. High school kids aren't going to be physically ready for the NFL. Nothing like the NBA. They'll still be forced by the market to go to college and refine their game.

It's all smoke and mirrors and passing the buck.

If the colleges were serious about the whole student-athlete compact, they would stop recruiting and admitting athletes that clearly are not students. Nobody is forcing the colleges to be a glorified minor league system.

I read it as exactly what they said. They don't want the NCAA to be the minor leagues for the NFL. Essentially, I think they want the NFL to create a minor league system and allow players to opt into the NFL minor leagues instead of attending college if they want to do that instead.

ELIMINATE ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Some entrepeneurs can start a minor league for young football players

And colleges can go back to having actual student-athletes

but if they can declare for the draft at any time then they can't complain about not being paid.

Every time you post on the MSB I think of that Conan 1864 baseball sketch.

They don't want to be perceived as such. They don't mind actually serving that function, though, as the mountains of network/cable cash can attest.

Use the baseball rules in every sport.

Out of high school or 3 years out.

NFL would laugh so hard at this

Why would they want to create their own minor leagues or change their draft rules (which would probably diminish the development these players get) when they have a perfect free one in the current NCAA setup?

This is just more Big Ten Jim Delany holier than thou bullshite. He knows as well as anyone that no one is gonna watch a bunch of 1950's era white kids who run 5.10 forty's no matter how much they attend class. Not when we're used to seeing such high class CFB. And his schools want that ESPN and FOX money as much as anyone else. It's just a PR move to make it seem like the BIg Ten is this mecca of pure college athletics
