I don't want to insult you, but $3,000 is nothing. Do you have an emergency fund of 3 to 6 months of your expenses? $3,000 would be a good start to that.

Also, if you have credit card balances or a car loan, that would provide instant help.

If you really want to invest it, pick a good index fund that tracks the S&P 500, for a long-term (10 to 25 year) investment.

Short term would depend on your tolerance for risk and expectation for gain.

Texastiger I'm in the same boat. Just sold my old truck for $5k cash. I've got two large debts. Rental Property and Truck. I'm comfortable in paying both of those as of now, so I stuck the $5k in the bank strictly to save.

Stuck 4 in reg savings and 1 in my rental property emergency savings (for repairs and what not)

There are times when I encourage people to invest in shotguns and canned goods - however, I figure everybody got that in the 10 months since Sandy Hook.

Buy two used trailers (mobile homes) and finance them to someone for $3000.00 a piece at 10% interest, with 10% down for 2-3 years.

$3000 meets or exceeds the min in a wide selection of mutual funds. What are your goals?

I'd check out a low costs S&P index fund for long term. I go through Vanguard for mine. If you go paperless with them the fees are lower.
