Hicks has been rather silent recently.

Feels weird to have a decent DLine rotation.

I'm not sure why.

Brown got manhandled a bit.
I hope he can pick it up.

Sometimes the best thing a 3-4 end does is create space for his lbs and other blitzers.

I thank you for resurrecting this thread.

Also, notice how vaccaro's grade has been reduced significantly by penalties.
-0.9 is kind of a lot.
He'll pick it up in time

Leverage. He needs to work on getting and staying lower. Also, he has more pure run-stopping responsibilities per snap than he would have if Bunkley were healthy.

Tyrunn Walker and Jenkins have filled in nicely lately.

Darren Sproles, best run-blocker in the league

Yeah, the only reason he's at the top is because he probably didn't run block at all, making him average (hence the 0.0).

Everyone who did run block performed below average, therefore getting a lower score.

I don't really understand how PFF determines the penatly grade, though.

Vaccaro was flagged once for Illegal Use of Hands, which did = a free first down for miami

But Graham cost about 19 yards and a first down on one of the long plays to Sproles and gets a positive penalty score?

I'm not sure.

Are you positive Vaccaro only had one penalty?
And personal fouls are likely more costly regardless of field consequence.

Illegal Use of Hands is only a 5 yard penalty on the defense, but is an auto-first down (similar to Defensive Holding).

Here are the 6 penalties we had and the result of the drive:
Ben Grubbs-Holding(set up 3rd and 20, but we converted)
Bryce Harris-False Start(2 plays after above play. Still scored TD on the drive)

Kenny Vaccaro-Illegal use of Hands (auto-converted what would have been a 3rd and 18. Miami's drive still stalled at their 23 yard line)

Drew Brees-Delay of Game (set up a 3rd and 16, we only gained 14 points on the ensuing play. Set up Hartley's missed FG)

Jimmy Graham-Holding (Sproles had converted a 3rd and 14 with a 25 yard catch and run. The penalty cost the saints 14 of those yards and the first down, but the Saints did convert the 3rd and 3.)
Charles Brown-Holding (on same drive as above, the Saints did manage to overcome the first and 20 but Darren Sproles fumbled at the 3 yard line.

In terms of short term cost to the team, these were all pretty costly on paper but the offense was able to overcome all but one of it's penalties (and still should have scored after the Delay of Game but Emo...) and the defense stepped up after its one penalty.

But like I said, I'm not sure consequence is involved in the scoring.

Hands to the face is much less common (and probably considered much worse) than holding, delay of game, and false start.

I figure but Harris gets a -.9 for a false start, drew gets a -.3 for a delay of game, Vaccaro gets a -.9 for illegal use of hands, but Jimmy and Grubbs get a +.3 for holding?

ETA and Brown got a +.5 for holding

Is it possible they are inviting penalties from the other team?

Just spitballing.

Could be. I really wish there was a play-by-play scoring tracker for their stats.

There probably is but the idea of paying for stats seems odd.

You have to remember that these are human people making these grades and while they are a good indicator of things aren't wholly accurate.

There can be outright mistakes and there can be not understanding the concept of certain plays and what assignments are which can lead to someone looking bad on a play getting graded poorly for it when in fact they probably made a great play just to get in a spot to have a shot at making it.

Think of Jordan almost batting down the ball on a flat route to the running back. He was supposed to be rushing the passer on the play but read it beautifully but it was a great throw and he had no shot at making the play. He probably got negative coverage points for it.
