OT mechanics. Car key programming

Does anyone know what causes a key to fail and turn on the theft system? Maybe it's not a problem with the key but with the system itself. Does anyone know places in Baton Rouge that could fix this, no dealerships.

TIA

What kind of car?

Does it do it with both keys?

96 Mustang GT. I bought it used and only was given one key. I've tried disconnecting the battery and let it sit for a while and that didn't work. I've tried all of the other suggestions I've see , but nothing. I'd rather not have to deal with a dealership but I might be SOL.

Does it have a resistor in the key?
You can check it w/ a multimeter if so.

I'm just not sure on something that old.
( not a dick comment, BTW)

Yeah it has the little chip or whatever.

I know the car is old, but it's been fun. Time to get rid of it though.

Ok, good deal.

That resistor is most likely bad. Rare, but it happens.
The theft system is not recognizing the key as legit.

New key will probably solve it.

Mustang GTs lead the league in fun. Solid cars and easy to go fast.

Thanks for the help. Still amazes me that all of a sudden it would just go out. No warning whatsoever. Any suggestions on where to get a new key from? I'm assuming that either a locksmith or a dealership would do the trick. I'll probably have to get this thing towed again, but luckily that 6 bucks I pay to state farm takes care of that.

Dealership, I think.

The battery is good, right?

Headlights are bright?

I've seen a bad battery cause something similar.

Yeah battery is less than a year old. I tried using another persons vehicle to produce a little extra juice to troubleshoot the problem, but that wasn't it I guess. I'm pretty decent about being able to work on my vehicles, but once it goes to electrical, I'm lost.
