I am totally ignorant about nascar, so while this is probably an easy/obvious answer, please forgive me because I admit I'm not familiar with the topic.

With that said..what is the point of the "chase"? If I understand it right (which I might not), they race the season like normal, then at a certain point they basically just have a top 10, and only those guys matter anymore, is that right? If that is right, my main question is why the hell did it change? Back in the day they would just race the whole season and whoever accumulated the most points won, correct? So what prompted a move to the current system?

Same reason playoffs expand - to give more teams/drivers a chance at the championship.

Wouldn't it give less? In the old way, it was just everybody do your best every race and whoever has the most points wins. Now, after a certain point only 10 people are in contention, right?

And what to the other drives not in the top 10 do when "the chase" starts..why even race if it doesn't matter?

After 26 races, only maybe 4-5 guys at the most would have a realistic chance to contend. With The Chase, all 12 drivers have a shot once the points are reset.

Well, usually by the end of the season, one or two drivers had pulled away from the pack, making them the only ones who had a real shot at winning it all.

Now, the 12 that make the chase all have a shot because they basically equalize the points. The idea is to make every year interesting, rather than just the occasional year where all the stars align and the standings are close.

ETA: beat to the punch

I'd be pissed if I was running away with the points all year, then have everything reset back to 0.

Like New England in 2007?

Also, the Chase came about because Matt Kenseth won a championship while only winning a single race. Ironically, he might win the chase this year with the most 1st place finishes of all drivers, and he has won the first two chase races.

The Matt Kenseth Rule

He could also lose it to someone like Junior who hasn't won a single race.

Not likely, but still possible.

Highly unlikely. Jr is more than a full race out.

The points are reset with the top 10 getting bonus points for each win. Driver with the most wins prior to chase is first.

The two wild card(3 this year) are set based on being in the top 20 and having wins. The wild cards do not get bonus points to start the chase.

The chase started because a champion was named before the last race of the season.

Other drivers race for the individual race win even though they are out of the chase(playoffs)

Not the same thing. In NASCAR, everyone has the same schedule.

This.

In years past, the championship was wrapped up well before the final race.
