FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!
Does that count Smith, Vilma, or any other contracts coming off next year?

Sportrac has us right at the cap and doesn't include Smith. He technically has a $10m base salary but it was a voided year that was included just to spread out the signing bonus. Any site saying that we're $15m+ over the cap almost certainly included that $10m.
And it's not going to excite people, but cutting PT and Moore would save us close to $6m.

speaking of... I haven't noticed when Tez is on the field? I know he has been playing, and since I'm sitting in the stands it can be hard to keep an eye on whether certain players are in the game/making plays.
someone fill me in on what they have seen from Tez so far?

That's the only good news and I should have put it in there, but knowing how much Payton loves him some Smith you never know.
More than likely Smith gets cut or restructured. That would save about $10.5 mil(I believe) if cut.
Vilma is on his final year this year so no help there. Harper can be cut but wouldn't save too much.
I believe Sproles would save the most after Smith at $3.5 mil if cut.

He was a split second away from a sack last game. Made a great move and forced a bad throw from Palmer. Still has a ways to go, but his potential is still high IMO

Sportrac has us right at the cap
It's been about a month since I checked and before they had us at about $135ish mil without Smith(I think). I wondered what else changed.
That's actually great news then.
Edit:
Looking at it, it actually says 2013 totals for 2014 and 2015(and I would guess the next few years also).
So I'm not sure that is our committed cap for next year. Really confused here.

He HAS to be cut next year, right? We fans have had him on the chopping block for 3 years now

This says we're at $136.8 mil with Smith, so we'd be at $125.3 mil without him if correct.
And we save $11.5 mil with Smith fwiw.
I'll have to look at spotrac more and see how they are calculating.
Edit:
I think we can shave another $1.6 mil off that number because from what I understand Jenkins didn't earn that bonus(according to spotrac) and is a FA next year.
Sproles would save $3.5 mil, Greer $3.2, PT $2.9, Moore $2.5, Evans $2.5, and Harper $2.1. Nobody else would save more than $1.5 mil at most.
But if anyone can work some magic it's Loomis.

So he hasn't been completely invisible since returning then. good to know. I just hadn't seen or heard his name while in the dome.

yeah we have all been saying this for a couple years now. IMO, he will never be an every down backer and more of a situational/3rd down pass rusher. Nothing wrong with that as long as he produces.
I'm still holding out hope that Tez can eventually play along side of Gallete as an every down OLB this year until we get Butler back. But its doubtful, so I'm glad we traded for Haralson.

I'm most concerned about our O-line.
Our front 7 is playing well. We need youth at CB and LB

Well that was the plan.
He was not meant to be an every down OLB this season.
That's butler/haralson
Wilson's a third down pass rush guy.

CB needs talent more than youth. We have young guys(PRob, White, Sweeting, and Lewis).
LB our oldest one would be Hawthorne at 29, Lofton at 28. And that would be their age next year not this year.

Looking over the roster better, we actually have guys that can be starters at every spot outside of C on both offense and defense signed up through next year.
Theoretically Armstead can step in for Brown, Harris or Jones can step in for Strief, Watson can step in for Graham(remember, this is theoretical not realistic), and Vaccaro/Harper can step in for Jenkins(depending on who you call a "starter").
But we are obviously going to resign Graham so our next biggest target has to be C, whether that is resigning DlP or drafting someone/bringing in a FA.
Edit:
Just for good measure these are the guys signed next year that will be 30 or older:
Brees 35
Watson 33
Greer 32
Colston 31
Evans 31
Harper 31
Moore 31
Sproles 31
Bunkley 30
Grubbs 30
Of these, we have Toon(Colston), Vaccaro/Bush(Harper), Stills(Moore), and Jenkins(Bunkley) looking like true potential replacements. Watson is a backup. Robinson could also fill Sproles role(to an extent) and we still have PT.
That means QB, CB, and definitely OG are things we need to start targeting in the next 2-3 drafts.

Well, I thought you meant that Wilson will become an every down guy.
I was trying to say...I don't think that's what the coaches want from him.

Agreed. If we're throwing entire team needs into the discussion I'd throw right or left tackle into the mix above the linebackers. Ideally I'd like to see Brown and Strief gone, one replaced by a free agent the other by Armstead.
