Does anyone know why we rarely played Auburn in the 60s, 70s, and 80s?

When they showed the series history last night it made me think it was low for another team in the West. That prompted me to go to tigerdroppings LSU football history and there I found we only played Auburn once in the 60s, twice in the 70s, and three times in the 80s.

I don't know much about SEC scheduling prior to 1992 so I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on this.

From '70 (?) to '92, we played six SEC games/season; five 'permanent' opponents and 1 rotated on a home & home. Sine there were ten teams in the SEC then, we played Auburn 2X/8 years.

Our 5 permanent were: UF, UK, OM, Bama, and State.

No idea why it was like this. Similarly, OM hasn't played Bama that often.

No. Before the league split into divisions, when Ark and SC joined, there wasn't really a set rotation like that. Our most permanent opponents have been Ole Miss and Miss St. Bana became rather permanent a bit later and then Florida. It seemed everyone else would rotate in and out of the schedule, with no rhyme or reason. We played some teams more frequently than others. It seems we'd play Tenn and KY rather frequently, Georgia a little less and, for whatever reason, we almost never seemed to play Auburn or Vandy.

I was a huge LSU fan as a child in the 80s. Bo Jackson was my favorite professional athlete because he played my two favorite sports. I remember my dad told me he went to Aubirn and I said "where?"

Looks like we only played Auburn once while he was there-1981 when he was a freshman and I was two years old.

I believe the reason we played Kentucky as often as we did during the 60s & 70s is because Coach Mac went there.

Yes. The rotation referred to began in '72 and ran until the conference expanded in '92. That's why we played Auburn in (and only in):
'72, '73
'80, '81
'88, '89

As mentioned earlier, in this span, we played five permanent opponents (Bama, State, OM, UK, and UF) and rotated the remaining four SEC teams playing home & home every eight years.

Don't know what the SEC scheduling approach was before '72.

ETA: the SEC added a 7th conf game somewhere around '88. I think the rationale was so that players would have the opportunity to play in every stadium during their career.

Little bit of trivia, three of the all-time SEC greats never played a down in TS: Herschel, Bo, and P. Manning.

That sounds like it was even dumber than the bridge schedules.
