Visiting DC in mid October, recommendations...

I will be site seeing that Friday while my friend is at work.

What are some places and landmarks to visit? Is everything touristy walking distance from one another.

How do DC'ers look upon professional day drinkers on vacation from New Orleans?

How should I pack for mid-October?

all the smithsonian museums are free. and are great. so just pick a few that interest you and go there. it's all walking distance.

and jeans and a sweater should be fine. shouldn't be much colder than low 60s during the day

you can walk between most tourist attractions. Everything is pretty close to the mall.

There is a lot of good food near Penn and also around the arena area.

The Smithsonians are all free. It is a long walk from the mall to the Jefferson Memorial, but it's very doable. They also have a very good subway system that will get you to most places.
Though to get to Georgetown and the national Cathedral you will need to take a bus.

The Washington Monument is closed, so for a good view of the city go to the Old Post Office on Penn, that's the second tallest building in the city.
A lot to do out there. The Holocaust museum was eye opening and the Spy museum was fun. Plus there are like 7 free art museums, and 10 Smithsonians.

The best is the Air and Space, though to see the space shuttle you have to take a Bus to Dulles, then a Bus to the Udvar Hazy center.

This, the smithsonian air and space museum is badass, a definite must see. Also, try to go see the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Or the weekend parade at the commandant's barracks.

We're going late October for the MCM ... will have 2 days to sightsee.

Plan on going to Arlington and seeing a changing of the guard -- to me this is a MUST for anyone. Also want to check out a Smithsonian or 2 -- didn't have much time the last time I was there. The Wall, the Korean War area ... the Capitol ... the Rotunda is GORGEOUS.

I've been but hubby hasn't ...

I'll be staying in Georgetown. I'm sure the RTA are a little more desirable then the ones in NOLA.

Don't get hammered and try to walk between various attractions. It can be a bitch and you'll end up pissing on the Ulysses S Grant Memorial while pretending to take a picture of the Washington Monument with your iPhone.

If you are only there 1 day, I suggest :

1) Arlington
2) Air & Space Museum
3) Museum of American History

Doubt you will have much time after that.

seconded.

also, the best time to see the lincoln monument is at night, IMO.

and yes, the bus and metro systems are both quite reliable.

Download and setup an "uber" account.

It's a black car service that picks you up anywhere and charges your CC directly and tips the driver.

Only reason I suggest this is because you're staying in Georgetown.

I did it a six months ago when I was there and it was helpful.

Can I bike/rent a bike from Georgetown to the areas that I want to visit?

Just got back to LA from DC today. I second uber.

Next go to the W's POV bar. Hit up old Ebbits grill. The round robin is another good drinking spot.

M street in Georgetown has tons of places. Had a good burger yesterday at Thunder Burger.

Hope that helps.

They have bikes for rent all over the city. The train is nice for going across town but for short hops taxis (or ubers) are best. For nightlife I'd hit chinatown, eastern market, clarendon, or georgetown. My favorite bar in georgetown is rhino, always a great selection of tail there plus you can party with the georgetown basketball team.

I'm doing DC from the 13th-19th. Still haven't decided on a hotel. I'm leaning towards the White House area and staying at the Hayes Adams or Sofitel. Any other recommendations? Is the Capitol Hill area better for sight seeing?

White House area will be closer to the mall, if that's what you want to see. The weather is great right now for the open top hop on hop off tours, great way to hit everything as quick as you can. Starts at union station fwiw
