Stud's move back down to the sideline. I saw him giving it to one of the lineman the other day after a blown assignment or something and I couldn't help but think that his presence down there has made a difference for the OL this year.

Don't get me wrong, our OL is good, really good. But it took solid coaching to get them there and I just think that Stud having the ability to be on the sidelines focused squarley on the OL during on gameday and not worry about the play calling up in the box has had a real positive influence on the situation in the trenches.

what say you rant????

I really don't know much about stud other than he is historically an OL coach. My question is, if we had any other coach with the OL playing as they are, wouldn't you pose the same questions?

I completely agree. Also, I've just always liked how Miles handles mistakes by players. Never really laying in to them (a la Saban). Miles takes them aside talks to them calmly and then gives them a pat on the back. I think this is just as effective if not more.

Apparently this makes you a pussy, and this is why Miles has lost control, according to 99% of the hardasses on here.

But really, Miles' method is extremely effective. Getting your ears screamed out can often times be counter-productive.

You're absolutely right

LSU will go as far as their offensive line takes them.

Lots of possibilities here....

1. Stud's move from OC position is addition by subtraction.

2. Stud's presence on the sidelines is, as your post suggest, a good thing in general, as he's giving players the business down there.

3. Cam Cameron's move to the OC position is in and of itself the difference.

I really don't know, but my gawd, this offense is like something out of the wettest of wet dreams.

I figured we'd be "better" offensively, but I never saw this coming.

Look, a lot of teams are scoring a lot of points (aTm's offense scares the bejesus out of me). Oregon hung 145 on somebody. Bama put up half a hundred against A and M. LSU hasn't played anyone. blah blah blah.

Anyone that's watched us/other teams has to see what I'm seeing, which is this methodically, precise, crisp, and efficient offense doing pretty much what it wants to do. Last year, if we had 3rd and 9, I'd get up and go make a drink because you knew an incompletion and a punt was coming. This year, it's more of a "who's he going to get the first". I'm literally surprised when we punt.

The fact that Mett is using the entire field, coupled with the fact that in Hill, we've got a true "can score anytime he touches the football" type back, makes this offense extremely tough to defend. You can no longer stack the box against LSU and count on our quarterback's ability to not make plays. Which means Hill gets to run against even odds. Our offense can win a game for us now. We hadn't been able to say that in a while.

I just believe that the environment that he has created on the team has the players not wanting to let him down (kind of how a son doesn't want to let down his father) rather than being scared of being berated or other repercussions.

yeah, people tend to think "at this level" you can get away with an OL/OC hybrid role and that the players know enough by now to adjust during the game or keep good technique, etc.

That's just wrong. Even NFL players need coaching at times to remind them to focus on fundamentals, reads, etc. Us losing that sideline presence last year probably hurt in some way, especially with two very green freshman in the starting lineup last year (T.Turner, V.Alexander). Those guys seemed to regress in the last 3rd of the season. I don't think that's coincidence.

I say that something that can't be understated is how important having a healthy, relatively experienced, group that's been together thru spring and fall is.

that said, I'm sure it is a good thing having him back focused solely on the OL and not the entire offense.

as an aside, the job Stud and co. did cobbling together last yr's OL after all the attrition doesn't get enough recognition. of all ppl, Guilbeau sung the staff's praises about that a good bit last yr.

Somebody kept screwing up on the extra point protection. That is what Miles was coaching the guy on. They watched him the next time and the special teams coach gave the signal to pull him. They made him sit out and watch an extra point or two from the sidelines, then put him back in during the second half. When he did it right they all gave him a good helmet tap.

Stud is an OL coach, not an OC. The coaching expertise level between him and Cameron is light years difference. But Stud being able to focus on his bread and butter has kept the fundamentals in line, although we did seem to have a spate of offensive penalties in that last game. Technique is great for run and pass blocking, though.

I think this is very true in that there's not another position group on the field were subtle adjustments can make huge differences. The continuity of the group, along with the Stud on the sideline, has made a big difference.

Well I can guarantee you that Copeland would not have gotten a 15 yarder last year in the first half against Bama wiping out a first down at the Bama 13 yard line if he played for a coach "a la Saban". Copeland had been warned twice by the refs before that play.

No worries, it only pushed us back to the 28 yard line, and it only took points off of the board (aborted fake field goal), and killed LSU's momentum for the first half. I don't think anyone really wanted to go to the SEC Championship game with a shot at the national title anyway.

Getting on a player when he screws up doesn't work. I guess that is why Saban is going for his 3rd. NC in a row!
