Handcuff Discussion, particularly regarding trades

Do you believe in handcuffs? Only certain players?
I drafted Spiller and continued to draft fairly well so I planned to pick up FJax late (7 bench spots), but a guy (on auto-draft) picked him up earlier than I expected. A round or two later, I picked up Bryce Brown because (1) the guy who took FJax has McCoy and (2) I think Bryce Brown is one of the few "proven" handcuffs.
What are your thoughts? Should I offer him Brown for FJax straight up? Or do I just hold on to Brown?
ETA: 12 team, PPR

I believe in certain ones, Fred Jackson being one of them. Turbin, Helu, Greene, Rodgers... guys like this are useless. I prefer to go high upside with younger guys. It worked out where I drafted Michael Bush late this year, but I've already dropped him in lieu of higher upside Joique Bell, for instance. I digress. If you can trade Brown for Jackson, and deepen your team, I say go for it.

In one of my drafts I hand cuffed McCoy with Bryce Brown in the 12th round. In the other draft I hand cuffed CJ2K with Shonn Green in the 12th round..
I normally dont hand cuff but this year I felt the need to for some reason.

I usually don't worry about it unless the RB is injury prone like Spiller, but even then I'm not using a pick on the handcuff until the double digit rounds.

quote:Rarely if ever. I will only draft a handcuff if they are the best player on the board at the position available. Its hasn't burned me for the 10+ years of doing fantasy football so I continue to avoid wasting a draft pick on a handcuff

While I agree on the handcuff, I don't see where people get that Spiller is "injury prone".
He has missed 2 games in his career. In his rookie year. He has played 16 games the last 2 seasons while seeing increased production both seasons

Handcuffs are dumb
Agreed. Used to handcuff both starters. You are better off looking for potential elsewhere. Someone in a time share or a younger back with potential to steal carries or possibly take over. I have 0 hand cuffs this year, but drafted guys like Andre Brown, Leveon Bell(as a 3rd RB, and yes, I know he's hurt), and Vick Ballard. There are others out there with more upside than a handcuff, who may play if your starter gets injured. Draft under the assumption your guys will make it through the season and look for someone who could fill in a couple weeks if necessary.

FJax has more value than Brown but I don't see an issue with offering that trade. I really only believe in handcuffs for high injury guys (CJ, Bush) that are in a system with a guy behind them that can fill in that system well. Otherwise a WW guy probably has more value.

Does not compute
Hasn't missed a game in 2 seasons while touches have gone up each season substantially.
