Etiquette / manners

So you're at home - and whatever is on the end of your fork falls off and hits the ground. No one is there to see.

Assuming you dont have a dog, whats your next move?

Anybody employ the 5 second rule?

Still edible so long as its not on the floor for more that 5 seconds

If it is anything juicy or sticky or anything like that, it will more than likely get animal hair from hitting any of my floors due to the number of pets I have, so I usually let one of the dogs get it.

My dog is old and not necessarily johnny on the spot anymore. So it depends on what it is. No dog hair on it is a plus.

But if no one else is there, I don't consider it a manners or etiquette issue. More like hygiene and food safety.
