A breakdown of Will Smith's snaps against the Raiders.

First series

-1st and 10. Smith is standing up playing SAM. Chips the TE on his way to the route and rushes the QB. Minimum pressure. Pass is incomplete.
-2nd and 10. Smith is once again standing up playing SAM. Delayed hand off. Smith is effectively blocked one on one by #48 (could be a TE or FB)
-3rd and 3. Smith is playing WILL. Rushes but is escorted upfield. Pass is complete for a first down.
-1st and 10. Smith is playing SAM. Drops back into coverage and takes away the immediate throw to the TE in the area. Flynn scrambles and Smith leaves the TE and goes in pursuit. Flynn completes the pass to the TE for 7 yards.
-2nd and 3. Smith is playing SAM. It’s a run to his side. Smith holds his blocker. The runner is stopped short of the first down.
-3rd and 1. Smith is a down lineman on the strong side. Playaction. Smith rushes in but is chop blocked by the RB. Pass falls incomplete.
-4th and 1. Smith is a down lineman on the strong side. At the snap, he pushes off the blocker in front of him, and takes on the pulling guard. The runner is stopped short. Good play by Smith.

7 plays. 1 pressure. 1 pass completion. 2 running play disruptions.

Second series

-1st and 10. Smith is playing WILL. A run to the strong side. Smith is stood up by the left tackle. Not a factor in the play.
-2nd and 8. Smith is playing WILL. Drops into coverage. Initially there is no receiver in his zone of the field. Flynn scrambles and McFadden fights through the linemen and runs an out route up the middle. Smith runs to his outside shoulder while Flynn throws behind him. Pass falls incomplete.
-3rd and 8. Smith is playing WILL. False start.
-3rd and 13. Three man line all standing up. Smith is on the weakside. Smith is held off by the tackle. No pressure. Pass is completed. Short of the first down.

3 plays. 0 pressures. One good play in coverage.

Third series

-1st and 10. Smith is playing WILL. Drops back into coverage. No one is in his area. Humber sacks Flynn.
-2nd and 16. Smith is playing SAM. Smith rushes initially, but sees it’s a draw. He then proceeds to job to the play up feel. Looks fat and slow, most likely because he is.
-3rd and 7. Smith is playing SAM. Smith attempts an inside bull rush. The tackle recovers and stops it. Flynn is sacked by Jordan.

3 plays. 0 pressure.

Fourth series

-1st and 10. Smith is playing SAM. Smith takes on a blocker. It’s a cut back run to his side. Smith disengages and makes the tackle. Holding call.
-1st and 18. Smith is playing SAM. Blitz. Smith rushes up field, but there’s a handoff to the other side. Smith is not in on the play.
-2nd and 16. Smith is playing SAM. Trips on his side. Smith drops into coverage and bumps the receiver, but the ball is quickly dumped off to the opposite side of the field.
-3rd and 11. 3 standing linemen with Smith on the strong side. False start.
-3rd and 16. Same setup as before. Smith is single blocked. Get’s no pressure. Pass is dumped off short of the first down.

4 plays. 0 pressures. One tackle negated by a holding call.

Fifth series

-1st and 10. Smith is playing WILL. Stunts to the inside. Get’s to Flynn but can’t make the tackle. Flynn scrambles for a loss of one.
-2nd and 11. Smith part of a 3 man front, but is the only one standing up on the weakside. At the snap, Smith runs up field but is subsequently double teamed. Harper gets the sack on the delayed blitz.
-3rd and 18. Smith is part of a 3 man stand up line, with Smith being on the weakside. Smith rushes upfield but is escorted away from the play by the tackle. The pass is dumped off and is short of the 1st down.

3 plays. 1 quick pressure.

Sixth series

-1st and 10. Smith is playing SAM. Humber comes on a blitz and is picked up by the RT. Smith comes in unblocked for the sack.
-2nd and 15. Smith is playing SAM. but is in a 3 point stance. Stunts to the inside, get’s pressure, and Flynn throws it behind the receiver. Incomplete.
-3rd and 15. Smith is on the strong side as part of a 3 man stand up front. Jordan is offsides and the Raiders get a free play. First down.
-1st and 10. 2 down linemen. Smith is playing SAM. Smith rushes up field and is escorted out of the play by the tackle (sound familiar). Flynn scrambles for a couple of yards.
-2nd and 6. Same setup as before. Jordan is the down lineman next to Smith. Smith pushes the tackle back while Jordan get’s inside pressure between the tackle and guard. Flynn is forced to get rid of the ball, and it comes up about a yard short of the first down.
*two minute warning*
-3rd and 1. Smith is a down lineman on the weakside. At the snap, Smith is able to get off of his block but can’t keep the running back from picking up the first down.
-1st and 10. 2 down linemen. Smith is playing WILL. He rushes but get’s no pressure. Pass is complete. First down.
-1st and 10. Same setup as before. It’s a run to Smith’s side. Smith is single blocked by a TE. Can’t disengage and the RB runs right by him.
-2nd and 2. Same setup as before. Smith is rushing up field and chipped by the running back while engaged with the LT. No pressure. Pass is complete for a first down.
-1st and 10. Smith get’s pressure, but oops, screen to the middle. Play picks up 6 yards.
-2nd and 4. Smith is playing WILL. Tries to speed rush. Get’s pushed up field. Touch down Raiders.

So are you trying to show that Smith didn't play well against the Raiders?

I just watched every play as objectively as possible. I gave him credit where it was due.

In my view (at least in this game), he was somewhat effective as a run defender. More so as a down lineman. He was more effective getting pressure up the middle on stunts. He was terrible getting pressure on the outside. His effort was also up and down. He was jogging a couple of times out there.

I also went back and watched every play that the starters were in the game for and concluded that the best player for each side was

Ramon Humber and Charles Brown

Obviously Brees played well but I wanted to look for someone besides him and found that Brown was only beat really badly on one play and Drew just stepped up and delivered a nice pass.

I think he'll be a situational player when Galette and Wilson are back.

re: A breakdown of Will Smith's snaps against the Raiders.

I just finished up my associates this summer. I'm taking time off from school because I'm homeschooling my oldest. I'm also watching some of my friends kids during the fall while they're at work to bring in some extra income.

While I don't have a 9-5 job, I'm pretty much always on the clock with 3 children under 5. I'm not complaining. I love it. The job I had before I rarely saw my family, so this is a blessing. Plus I'm good with kids. I work with them at my church as well.

Only if the situation is that all other able bodies are incapacitated.

I'm putting Smith on the clock with Ingram -- prove you can still play.
