As I don't purchase nearly enough gas to max out the $1,500 quarterly bonus, I started doing research into how to maximize it in other ways. The most common seems to be buying gift cards at gas stations. However, that seems to be easier said than done. To pull it off, you need to meet three requirements:

1. Purchases inside the gas station are coded as "gas" on your statement.
2. They sell gift cards you actually want to use.
3. They allow you to purchase said cards with a credit card.

As I know the Freedom/Sapphire combo is fairly popular on this board, I was wondering if anyone had found a location in or around Baton Rouge that met all relevant criteria.

I've been wondering too in New Orleans. What sucks is I've found other businesses that are not commonly in LA that work wonders like 7-11.

It's a pain. Vallero supposedly sells vanilla reload cards but the only one nearby is on Claiborne avenue here and I haven't found the time or courage to see if that one does.

I wonder if I buy things inside a gas station it would be coded as gas if I used my Pen Fed card.

From what I gather, it varries by card and merchant. It seems as though the best thing to do is to make a small purchase of food/drink inside and then check how it's coded before making your big purchase.

I'm in Lafayette for the weekend and there is a Valero right down the street. Might have to check it out.

How do you quickly find out how the purchase was coded? Waiting til the next statement (which can take a while ) is the only way I know

I don't have a chase freedom (yet) but I would buy nothing but 5% cash back purchases... Then buy one set of gift cards from a gas station and see how your numbers add up.

Like the previous poster said you'll have to wait for you statement to see how their coded.

Ended up not having time. Or, more accurately, whenever I thought about it, I never had time at that moment

As for figuring out the coding, I can't think of a way other than waiting for a statement cycle. That was part of the impetus for this thread. I figured there would be a handful of people that had figured this out last gas rewards cycle.

Well, some blogs say some code as gas inside and some don't. 7-11 was one that coded as gas inside.

I'm sure if you search the blogs and such, you will find out people's experiences with the coding for each individual chain.
