Decoys for your jerk string - weighted vs unweighted keel

I'm in the process of DIY texas rigging decoys for the upcoming season. Some have weighted keels, some don't. I will be setting aside 6 to use on the jerk string which I will not tx rig.
Is it better for the decoys on the jerk string to have a weighted keel or an unweighted keel? Or does it not matter at all?
Also, out of pintail, greenheads, woodies, teal and gadwall, which would you use on your jerk cord and why?

We use three unweighted but thats bc that all we have.

We use weighted, but that's all we use. It doesn't matter what species, it's all about ripples on the water.

I have 3 unweighted keels. Ive got 2 hooked on the rear of the keels and the other hooked up front to tip forward and thrash a little.

I don't think it matters
I use these with the same ball of twine. Roll out the line then clip dekes in place. It works well if you're moving around a lot. Sometimes you have to go a long way to find something to tie to.
I have a rigging ring on several dekes and clip these to the ring.

Do u have a mold for making egg sinkers for Texas rigs and if so where do u buy your lead from. I'm thinking about making my own also.

We just got the set up from Academy, it was cheap like 20-30 bucks.

Nope. I am just rolling up the old strap weights and using them. There is no reason you need egg weights. The decoy is supposed to slide up and down the line, not the weight.

My first batch of decoys I bought TX rigs, but since I now have over 9 dz dekes, I refuse to spend that much. The expensive part is the weights (usually $1.20/6 oz sinker), but since I have all those strap weights I will use them. I just ordered 100 yards of 400# line and accompanying crimps for $25 to rig the 4 dozen or so I have left unrigged.

We use unweighted mallards
Funny story last year we had a smiling mallard land next to the jerk cord bunch. The guy would pull the cord 5 to 6 foot & the duck would swim as fast as he pulled with the group, he let it go & the duck would haul arse after them. Played with that fricker for 10 minutes or so

Do y'all use jerk string all season or just late season? We use flappers, but I'm thinking about moving to jerk string in late Dec-Jan

When there is no ripple on the water from the lack of wind.

Depends where we are huting. If it the at our spot on public land we usually only use a few decs and the jerk string.

Flooded timber we use jerk strings all the time. In the rice fields we mostly use flappers but on calm days with no wind action a jerk string works wonders for those ducks that just won't quite commit.

I use unweighted ones.

What tactics do you use with the jerk string? I've never used one. Do you just work them back and forth til the birds commit? Pull it once just to get some water movement?

It's the same one I use. Works flawlessly. My bro has about a $50 one and it doesn't work as well and is more complicated.

Use it like your duck calls use it to get there attention and when they don't come any closer after they start to circle jerk on the string to reel them back in.
