The Pentagon Has Lost Its Leverage with Egypt. Now What?

LINK
quote:

President Barack Obama has refused to call the military takedown of Morsi’s elected government a coup, and will continue to send the $1.3 billion in military aid that the U.S. gives to Egypt each year. And Obama is insisting that this is Egypt’s problem -- not America’s.
How convenient? This administration backed the outing of the previous regime during the Arab Spring, but now he chooses to remain on the fence.
quote:

“America cannot determine the future of Egypt. That's a task for the Egyptian people,” Obama said in a statement from his Martha’s Vineyard vacation on Thursday morning. “We don't take sides with any particular party or political figure. I know it's tempting inside of Egypt to blame the United States or the West or some other outside actor for what's gone wrong.”
If we cannot decide Egypt's future why are we giving them $1.3 billion a year? Based on that comment alone, we should not be giving Americans welfare, since we cannot determine their future.

Then why in God's name are we picking sides in Syria? Shouldn't the Syrians decide for themselves?

It is truly embarrassing to watch this administration in action. Makes me wish we had elected Paris Hilton.

They lost their leverage and trust in the entire middle east when we pulled the rug out from under Mubarak.

Most of our actions during Arab Spring were huge mistakes.

Could the foreign policy of this group of amateurs in the WH be any more inept?

It is embarrassing and dangerous at this point.

One has to ask themselves if these clowns are really that inept, or if they hate America.

Yeah, that's a pretty ignorant statement.

If our money doesn't buy is influence, we should immediately cut them off, because as long as we're supporting the Egyptian military, we'll be the natural targets of blowback from jihadists who will view us as co-conspirators in General Sisi's butchery and oppression.

I am certainly no ME expert so anything I have to offer on the subject may very well be incorrect. But does it appear this administration has supported the ousting of secular leaders in the ME? This opened the door for "so called democracy" but it has also opened the door for Muslim fundamentalists to seize control as well. As far as Egypt is concerned the Suez canal and the Israeli border are definitely things the USA should be concerned with. We basically bribed the previous leader of Egypt to maintain peace in the region. Could the USA expect to achieve the same results with the Muslim Brotherhood in control of Egypt?

Well, during Morsi's year in power, not only did he maintain the peace treaty with Israel to the chagrin of his hardline supporters, but he also brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that so far has held up.

EDIT: I think everybody loses if the Brotherhood loses faith in the democratic process, or if the Egyptian military bans them from politics, because if you deny them the ballot, they will resort to the bullet.

I thought Obama was suppose to wave his arm and calm the tides and ride in on his unicorn farting skittles for all and strike the land with his magic shepherd rod and cause an arab spring? Little white daisies popping up everywhere and free skittles for all?

Fair enough, but a years time is hardly a gauge of one's agenda.
