What constitutes a Rivalry? Saints are 16-9 since 2000 and 10-3 since 2006. Is it really a rivalry? Plus the Falcons suck.

9-2 under Sean Payton.

...the rivalry goes back before 2000--Falcons lead overall series 47-41

It's a rivalry now for the mutual dislike each team has for the other, independent of who's good at the time.

Hate.

Doesn't matter if both teams are Super Bowl contenders or if both teams suck. They both have to hate each other which makes those games meaningful, no matter what the W-L column of each team is going into the game.

Example: Last year, we were pretty mediocre but knocking Atlanta out of the undefeated column was more than exhilarating. And yet, I'd go even further and say the best moment I experienced last season was bathing in the afterglow of Atlanta's playoff oust, ensuring they wouldn't go to the Super Bowl & still Lombardi Trophy-less.

LSU-Bama enjoy a temporary rivalry right now. But once one or the other drop out of the top 25 for a significant period, the rivalry will fizzle.

Whereas, Auburn & Bama could both be winless, but for the winner, it makes their season, and the loser bitches for a whole year.

There's a lot of Georgians that give me hell when I make fun of ATL or boast about the Saints on Twitter.

And Atl is currently 47-41 against the Saints.

But let me guess, next post will quote this and post some image of the cotton gin or something in black and white?
Because last year < rivalry record < 10 years ago, amiright?

I can say that if the Saints win only 2 games a year, I'm ok with that as long as it's the Falcons.

I can say that it's also watching the other team lose, and lapping up the tears of their fans when the last second ticks off the clock in a playoff loss....

They were lucky to get out of the first game with a W. Our coach gets wrongfully fricked for a year and they still split with us.

I hope Mike Smith and Matty Ice stay around for a few more years. They are so clutch

ATL won the 1st game? Guess we went 14-2 then rather than 13-3.

You have to admit, the NFL is about recent success, and the attitude of "what have you done for me lately?". Both teams have had that, and that has only sweetened the rivalry. However, the Saints, lately, have gotten the best of the Falcons.

We hated each other when we sucked haha. I think it's one of the most underrated rivalries in sports. It just started getting attention over the last few years. It feels like a college rivalry to me, which makes it even cooler.

frick the Falcons.

We hate them and they hate us. As much as we hated the 49ers, they were far enough above us most of the time that the hate was one way. The Falcons and Saints are definitely rivals, the hate is there on both sides.
