You get what you pay for... What is wrong?
Posted on 8/15/13 at 8:38 am to wickowick
i dont know shite about cars. I just dont feel like paying some dude money to hook it up to his little computer for 30 seconds and charge me.
Car is slightly overheating. But it wont go all the way to red on gauge. The needle will go like 3/4s of the way up and then back to normal.
I dont know if its my radiator, water hose, thermostat, etc.

autozone will read the code for free.

Doesn't sound like you're getting a code to read. You just need someone who can figure out what's wrong. The first suggestion is always going to be the thermostat, and that does sound like it may be the problem. But, it never is.

Sounds like you need to check the coolant level first.
May need to be topped off.
If you've already done so, it's most likely your thermostat.
Easy and cheap fix, either way.

Also O'Reilly's or almost any other chain auto parts store will do this for free.

Yep--If the check engine light is not on, there will be no code. Overheating can be caused by many different things. You're going to have to bite the bullet on this one. Catch it before it gets worse.

i can use water if i dont have any antifreeze laying around right?
Posted on 8/15/13 at 9:14 am to Walt OReilly
sounds like thermostat is sticking and not engaging till real high temps. Spend 15 bucks and get a new one.

When are you having the problem?
At idle in traffic
At highway speed
in moving traffic
all of the above?

I don't think a lack of antifreeze will cause an overheating issue. It just won't stop a freezing issue. Low coolant level, thermostat, water pump or a bad hose.

Yep.
I learned long ago to start simple and work your way up, if necessary.
Now at least your ride won't overheat when they stop you for your ninth DWI.

Whenever you add coolant to a warm engine, pour coolant into coolant container NOT THE RADIATOR.
You run the risk of warping the heads when you add coolant to a warm radiator/engine.
