May be a MSB post, but whatever, I don't want to discuss other teams. So, I kept some info in spreadsheet for a work a few years back. Had some time and updated it recently. It’s meaningless, and I wish I could add more data, but it is consistent and provides some perspective of the last 10 years.

Here are “best” CFB programs from 03-12 based on the following 6 criteria:

1. Winning Percentage (LSU is No. 4)

2. End of Season Ranking—Average of Coaches & AP inversed (Finishing No. 1=25 points, 2=24, etc) (LSU is No. 3)

3. “Quality Wins” — Inversed points assigned for beating a ranked team (LSU got 25 points for beating Bama in 2011)(LSU is No. 1)

4. “Quality Losses” —Two part category: 40% is ratio of item 3 above and losses to ranked teams added the same way (LSU’s loss to No. 1 Bama gets them 1 negative point, losing to No. 25 gets you -25)

60% is the computer ranking total of losses to unranked teams by the Congrove computer. Want to add others like Sagaran but takes a lot of time. The lower the number the better.
(LSU is No. 1 overall; No. 2 in ratio, No. 3 in losses to unranked teams )

5. BCS Score—Most arbitrary but wanted to reward getting to big games. 4 points =win BCSNCG, 3 points =lose BCSNCG, 2 points =win BCS game, 1 point=lose BCS game. (LSU is tied with Bama and OU for No. 3)

6. BCS National Championship bonus=100 points for winning a title. Equal to winning any other category. (LSU is tied with UF for No. 2)

For 1-5 I took the net number, and broke down a percentage and assigned points (1-100) according to how each team compared to the leader. For example, Boise State has the best winning percentage (.893) so they get 100 points. LSU had .81 or 90.76 % of 100, so they get 90.76 points. No vacated games were factored in. USC didn’t get shite for winning their fake title in 03.

I can show more data but it takes time and I doubt anyone cares. Let me know what you think. Good offseason exercise and I’m sick at home today.

This is the most teams I’ve used. However, LSU has been No. 1 for the last three years. UF was in ’00-’09. Unfortunately we will likely fall next year unless we win a title.

1 LSU 657.61
2 Alabama 644.39
3 Florida 576.22
4 USC 515.81
5 Texas 436.62
6 Ohio State 394.38
7 Oklahoma 389.67
8 Auburn 385.48
9 Oregon 281.06
10 Boise 269.45
11 Georgia 246.30
12 Virginia Tech 240.69
13 TCU 212.54
14 Wisconsin 203.85
15 Michigan 202.48
16 WVU 201.83
17 Florida State 185.80
18 Iowa 181.13
19 Stanford 171.41
20 Penn State 170.92
21 Utah 170.35
22 Notre Dame 167.92
23 Louisville 165.92
24 Arkansas 158.05
25 Miami 157.95
26 Oklahoma St. 157.14
27 Clemson 138.88
28 Kansas State 133.84
29 Cincinnati 125.61

If you take out criteria 4 and 5, which are the most subjective, you get this:

1 LSU 370.9389
2 USC 315.8137
3 Oklahoma 303.0055
4 Florida 302.8881
5 Ohio State 294.3785
6 Texas 263.285
7 Alabama 257.7239
8 Auburn 245.481
9 Boise 242.7844
10 Oregon 227.7255
11 Georgia 226.3007
12 Virginia Tech 200.6923
13 TCU 192.5416
14 Wisconsin 183.8503
15 Michigan 169.148
16 Iowa 167.7964
17 WVU 161.832
18 Florida State 159.1332
19 Arkansas 151.379
20 Penn State 150.9241
21 Miami 144.6159
22 Oklahoma St. 143.8106
23 Utah 143.6816
24 Louisville 139.2483
25 Stanford 138.0749
26 Notre Dame 134.587
27 Clemson 132.2122
28 Kansas State 120.506
29 Cincinnati 112.2735

*I was just screwing around but went on kind of a bender to add more teams. Let me know what you think of how to make it better.

Well, we lose there, and we will be dethroned next year. So congrats.

Unfortunately this is true. NC is the only thing that matters.

Nice work.

Some other interesting tidbits that only LSU has accomplished within the last 18 years:

- LSU has won 8 or more games in 15 of the last 17 seasons.
- LSU had had a winning season in 16 of the last 18 seasons.
- LSU has had 13 consecutive winning seasons.
- LSU had had 13 consecutive bowl appearances.
- LSU has gone to 16 bowl games in the last 18 years, winning 11.

- Les Miles has lost two OOC games in 8 seasons
(Penn State and Clemson)
- Les Miles has lost 2 Saturday night home games that STARTED at night in 8 seasons: Florida '09 and Alabama '10.
(Technically you could include Arkansas '07, Ole Miss '08, Alabama '08, all that ended at night.)

Bama sucked tho before 08 season. So LSU might be the best team in the past 10 years.

Bama won 12 NC's in the last 8 years, so, no.

Considering that the rules for getting to the national championship game are completely arbitrary I would say that to some extent I have to disagree.

However, wins against ranked teams is completely subjecting as it depends on how good other teams are in your conference are that year.

So therefore that is why you need multiple variables.

Now, you might argue that this ranking system shows that LSU has been the most consistent team in college football over that span, but it is hard to say it was the best.
