I've decided I'm going to Belize to scuba dive for my birthday. Thing is I want to leave September 2nd. Would there be any way to get certified before then? Check dive and all? Would there be anyway to take classes and do my check dive while in Belize, or does the instructor that you take classes with have to do it?

Don't know about around here. I'm sure there is though. I did a really in depth course in Nashville over about 3-4 weeks when I was living up there. Did checkout dive in Puerto Rico.

I'm pretty sure places like that have something like vacation certification. Basically you can get certified while there, but can only go down 30 feet or so. So unless you want to do serious diving this is probably the way to go.

I've looked into that, but I've wanted to get into diving for a while. We go offshore and I want to get into spear fishing, so I figure I might as well try and get it before so I can get used to it.

There is an instructor member on here who may be able to help you out based on location. His training focuses on the free diving and spear fishing skills you would want to have for the rigs. He'll also certify you on a checkout in La gulf waters. You'll pay a little more for the convenience, but you will also get a lot more out of it.

Definitely can be done by 9/2. I recommend that you get cert before the trip or you'll be spending all your time learning and proving what you've learned instead of enjoying your vacation dive.

I'll send you his contact info if you want it.

That would be great. What's your email? I only have my work email and don't want to post on here

Duck, let me know what you find. I'm in Ponchatoula and would like to certify as well. We have a mutual friend that I bet would do it as well

Good advice on the pre-trip cert. Due to time, wife and I took classes and pool training prior to trip to Belize years back. It took two days of open water training to get certification. Time should have been spent relaxing and having fun.
