Any recs? Was thinking of renting a yak and going mess around one of the many lagoons. Or just going get a cheap rod/reel combo and a couple of Top Dog Jr's and going throw by the rocks along side 331. Haven't seen anyone fishing in the surf... Wonder if there's any Pompano there?

Any advice?

I normally vacation in Watersound Beach which is near where you are talking about. We have caught perch, black bass, small mangrove snapper, jack crevalle, and redfish in Camp Creek Lake. There is a Florida State Park about 2 or 3 miles West of Camp Creek that has a lake very similar to the Camp Creek, but I am not sure if fishing is allowed. A kayak would be great, but we caught all of our fish from the pier at the resort. Most fish were caught on shrimp, cut bait, or cracked crab on a Carolina rig.

There is a store by the red light in grayton beach that a guide service used to operate out of. The name escapes me right now. I know they still rent bikes and yaks, although I do not know if the guide service is in business. I would swing by there, rent a yak, and see if you can get advice from someone there re: where to fish. I've fished some of lagoons around there with very little luck.

I went talk to a guy at a bait shop. Picked up a cheap surf rig and some frozen sand fleas. My boys are gonna try to catch some live ones too.

They say sometimes you'll get lucky and hang a king fish or a cobia out there too. We'll see. If I catch anything, I'll be happy.

You will be very dissapointed. I once tried to book an inshore fishing trip in Destin and the guide asked where we were from. When I told him we were from LA he refused to take us saying we would be very dissapointed as the trout and redfishing there is pitiful compared to South LA.

My honest advise is to drink beer and relax.

Fish back home...where you will catch fish. If you just want to get away from your family tell them you are going fishing and post up at a bar.

Might snag a Pompano on the sand fleas. That's about it but damn they taste good. Inshore in Destin really sucks arse. We do real good offshore though.

Yellowfin Outfitters beside the Old Florida Fish House (East of Seaside a couple of miles on 30A) will have good info on the fishing as will the Old Florida Outfitters in Watercolor (West of Seaside about 1/4 mile). OFO also runs the best fly outfitting charter business on the Panhandle as well...Shallow Water Expeditions.

I found quite a few blue fish and pompano a couple of weeks ago on fly by getting on the beach by 6:00am and just walking the shore, essentially hunting for schooling fish...which are not hard to find in the exact same area you are staying.

This is where I went. They were super nice and set me up good.

Thanks! Expectations are low. If I'm gonna have to sit on the beach all day, I might as well be soaking a line. If I happen to catch a Pompano or two then I will have achieved my goal.

Gonna try tomorrow evening and Friday morning.

Snappers, when legal. Unless you really know the Capt. well, most charters will not overfish their spots. You will probably leave a structure that is loaded to the hilt with Snapper while the bite is still on. Grouper. AJ. Usually catch our bait at the jetties before hitting the blue water. Mainly bottom fishing unless our Capt. lets us do some trolling, where we have hooked up with Dolphin, Yahoos, Kings, you name it. Been running with the same guy for years so he cuts us some slack.

Finally got to fish this evening. Had four bites and landed a big ladyfish. They wouldn't touch frozen sand fleas, but the few live ones I was able to catch all got bit. Gonna try again tomorrow.

Been trying that this week some. Only one bite so far, and it was a lady. I've seen a few pompano snorkeling. All were just beach side of the first bar in very shallow water. Gulf side is barren except for rays.

I'm in Destin and we took a charter out today. Caught some fishes and they were tasty.
