What is his true speed? What makes him such a good football player? It isn't that he is a speedster right? There are a lot of speedier guys among the other 21 players on the field. Yet he seems to run away from people, he runs guys down, he beats other players to the ball on defense. It really is pretty outragious.

He's fearless. Zero hesitation. That's something you can't really teach.

TM has great football speed. He may not be a true burner on the track, but he plays fast during games. He has amazing instincts/reaction time that he can capitalize on by having great acceleration. His fearlessness and tenacity often allows him to make plays that others only whiff at.

the 'want'!!!!

he wants to make a tackle...he wants to break up a pass...he wants to intercept a pass...he wants to create a take away...he wants to go house every time he touches the ball...he wants to walk off the field a winner every time he plays and he will do whatever it takes to make that happen. after the game he wants to get stoned and just chill with his friends. pretty seamless guy who happens to possess some of the most exquisite instincts I have ever witnessed. he and Peterson were maybe the two most captivating kids to ever play for LSU.

In accordance with the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, as proposed by Howard Gardner, the answer would be that Tyrann Mathieu possesses exceptional levels of kinesthetic intelligence, as demonstrated by his exceptional ability to control his body with a degree of precision that impacts the game in statistically meaningful ways. Two good supporting examples of this from the 2011 season would be the forced fumble and fumble recovery against Florida, and the exceptionally sure tackle of the significantly larger Bama tight end in open space during the regular season. Both of these plays demonstrated a unique ability to leverage his weight and strength in a precisely focused manner.

I would further posit that he displays a high level of spatial intelligence. There are plenty of talented athletes whose athleticism doesn't translate into the same level of success as they don't don't interpret the quickly shifting elements on the playing field with the same acumen and end up being out of position, etc.

In summary, it is primarily the combination of kinesthetic and spatial intelligences which facilitate a personal playing style that earns such monikers as "game changer" or "playmaker".

Satisfied?

He is a solid football player with Natural football instincts, along with above average speed and he plays better than most guys in football gear (Shoulder Pads, helmet, thigh pads, etc...), which accentuates his on the field speed.

Because of his superior instincts his hands are very active and his angles of attacking the ball carrier cause fumbles, and his awareness to know where the ball will bounce makes him able to react to the bouncing ball, retrieve it and haul arse to the endzone.

And his toughness makes up for his light 4 reps on the bench press.
