Somewhere in between. Closer to GOAT, though. Every time I think maybe it's nostalgia that's making me revere this game, along with both episodes, so highly, but it takes me 15 minutes of a replay and I'm reminded again how epic HL2 is. Even with how they ended episode 2.

Everything up until Xen is there. They will be releasing Xen when it's finished and supposedly it's gonna be a much expanded area and could be a full game by itself.

Xen was kind of a "meh" ending to HL1, but by then you had just played a revolutionary game so what did it matter?

That's how I feel about Xen too. Hopefully the black mesa source Xen will be a great alternative.

I'd say get all except Lost Coast. From what I remember, it was just a demo of the Source engine. Half Life is great and the base for Counter Strike and Day of Defeat. Dated graphics, but crucial part of story. Half Life 2 is a must, and episodes 1 & 2 are pretty much DLC that continue the story.

It's an older game, so graphically, maybe I'd see your point. But the story still holds up today.
