I agree that this well fire is unlikely to develop into anything near the level of the Deepwater horizon. However, to say that an oil spill that leaked for three months into the gulf 'wasn't that bad' is asinine.

gas well, I'm not worried, what I am worried about is the Obama will use this to shut down something in the gulf, can't wait for the full DOJ investigation that should cost us about 1 billion.

This loss of well control coupled with the 225 one earlier this month will likey result in soe type of response from regulators/industry on what the causes are and how to prevent.

The potential for this to happen again on an oil producer is there.

FOX News just reported that the rig is about to collapse

Yep. Rig is toast. Flame is sputtering but re-igniting to ~60 feet.

ETA: Decks collapsing from heat.

what's the story on the BOP on this rig? Even if the rig sinks will we be able to avoid some massive spill or dump of gas from the well this time around?

Disclaimer - I know every little about the O&G industry so forgive me for these and any further dumb questions

Looks like BOP did not do it's job.

Spill will not happen because the well is a gas producer. Also looks hopefull that it will lose pressure/sand up and hopefully shut itself in.

Not going to be a Mocando.

Definitely not from an environmental standpoint.

I am afraid that if this thing sinks, the current administration is going to go ape shite and pull all the damm permits again.

this is starting to annoy me. The times when the BOP are actually needed, they fail. WTF

good news

only chance of a spill is if this a dual completion or if another zone further down or up the hole is a oil zone. Or if it damages the header on the production platform and their SSV's malfunction

Considering that its all melting and about to sink, I would say this is likely.

Well, let's hope not. I don't think so.

The cantilever deck collapsed, as well as at least a portion of the platform decks. With the flame "Sputtering", I'm holding out hope that the rig is able to remain standing.

Well A-3 is the only well in ST 220 that has produced in the past year. Rig and Platform may collapse but the chance of anything serious other than this one well producing is pretty small.
