Widespread Panic's Space Wrangler. Give it a listen.

Listen to it all the time and i don't generally gravitate toward "that kind of music"

Remarkable album for a first album too ps. Hard to believe how much they had their shite together 1st go.

Can't get in to this band. No edge at all.

CHSgc--OP is right. Space Wrangler was ahead of it's time for 1988. Give it a try, it has plenty of edge. One hell of a debut.

My priest said that listening to space music is a sin (and that it sucks). Can't be doing that.

I've always loved that album. I wouldn't call it space rock though. more rootsy blues.

Edge is something out of the ordinary, a risk.

WSP has always struck me as safe and predictable. There are no surprises. The sound is generic. There's not much that distinguishes them, in my mind.

In the past, I've thought that WSP just doesn't come across w/ any intensity, either.

Just going to have to disagree with this. I think what makes them great is their intensity during live performances.

Agreed. I always felt like their live shows were a snooze fest.

I don't listen to jam bands really at all but my friends do and two years ago I had the chance to see WSP and Phish pretty much back to back (w/in two wks of each other). Phish was much more engaged and generally an overall stronger performance. They also played much more improvisationally and seemed technically superior. I'm never going to be the guy following either band or listening to bootlegs in my car, but I was struck by the differences in two bands that I'd regarded from afar as pretty much interchangeable.

They aren't interchangeable though. They are both considered jam bands but that's really the only thing they have in common IMO.

I agree w/ you. Seems the fans of both have built up a rivalry. Just saying that as an independent observer, were I to name a jam band that plays w/ a lot of intensity, my vote would be for Phish after those concerts I witnessed a few years back.

Fair enough Phish is a great band. I just prefer WSP's style more but that's just my preference
