re: Would you prefer to play Florida every year if you had the choice?

I prefer to play Florida every year Bama plays them. Is that simple enough?

I love that we play Florida every year. I wish we could play every SEC team every year. But since we can't, we have to sacrifice something on one or more of three issues:

1. Getting to play this great, fun game every year;

2. Having an equal chance in the division race with Alabama, etc.; and

3. Getting to play other teams in the East often enough to at least get to feel like we're in the same conference with them.

For me, even though #1 is something I'd rather not give up, #2 and #3 combined are probably more important. If it were up to me, I'd probably go with all rotating inter-divisional games. That would keep #2 and #3 at the expense of #1. The next option would probably be to keep the current schedule format but count only division games toward the division title, which would keep #1 and #2 but sacrifice #3. Right now, we are sacrificing #2 and #3 just to keep #1.

quote:

not that long ago Tennessee was a powerhouse. Things change in CFB

Tennessee has not been anywhere close to Florida's level during the entire era of divisional play, a stretch of 21 years and counting. By pretty much any measure of performance, Florida has outperformed Tennessee over the last 50 years. Demographics suggest that's not going to change any time in the foreseeable future. Sure, there may be the occasional year (or even a couple) when Tennessee is better, just like there is the occasional year when Ole Miss is better than LSU (as recently as 2008, for example), but long term, Tennessee has as much chance of outperforming Florida as Ole Miss has of outperforming LSU.

quote:

let's not frick with tradition because we think things are a little difficult right now.

So, it's OK for LSU to be at a distinct disadvantage in the division race every year because it's "tradition"? We should play Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Missouri less often than we play North Texas and Appalachian State just to preserve the "tradition" of the Florida game? What kind of reason is that?

How many more Herschel Walkers, Bo Jacksons and Peyton Mannings should come through the SEC and never play LSU to keep this sacred "tradition" of the Florida game?

I love the Florida game. Almost all LSU fans do. But is it worth what we have to give up to keep it? I don't think so.

What have we become, scared? Hell yes, I'd keep this game. It's smash mouth football every time. With the ever-increasing neutral sites, furmans, and Kent states games - we can at least count on this every other year being a raucous party down in DEATH VALLEY.

I would love the game to continue in many ways. It's become a decent rivalry, particularly in the past 10 years.

I hate the competitive advantage it gives other West opponents.
It may take years for Tennessee to truly become a challenge to Bama.

Living in Jacksonville probably skews my opinion. I like the friendly smack talk around game time but Gators are, by their very nature, arrogant and contemptuous fans.

It doesn't matter, the SEC won't change the "permanent opponent" crap any time soon, if ever.

re: Would you prefer to play Florida every year if you had the choice?

LSU has played Florida every year for the past 60 years (save a 3-year stretch in the 1960's); it's become a great, traditional rivalry that some LSU fans don't see as "rivalry" per se for some reason.

As far as the permanent opponents, what a useless discussion. If put up for a vote, most SEC schools would vote to keep the permanent opponents intact, so obviously our opinions don't matter here.

As far as whether or not it's "fair" for anybody, the schools with the "tough" opposite division rivalries are AL/AU/FL/GA/LSU/TN, and the last time anyone other than those six won the SEC outright was Ole Miss in 1963, so obviously the permanent opponent thing isn't getting in anybody's way. If the permanent opponent makes a school's schedule too tough, that's what the OOC games are for--that's four games where you can schedule a break or two to even it out a bit.

I love my LSU/Florida game every year, and it's going nowhere, and it isn't unfair to anybody, so everybody quit your bitching.

I have no problem playing FL every yr. I do have a problem w/ playing FL, AND UGA, or SCAR, while our chief rival in the West plays TN and Vandy, or Mizzou, or KY.

No there should be no permanent opponets I dont care if there was a 100,000 year rivalry. We play each other all the time every game in the SEC is a rivalry game

Most SEC opponents want there to be a permanent opponent, so you're wrong.

If both programs were in the same division, absolutely!

As it is now, frick no.

The goal should always be to win one's own division first. Permanent cross-division opponents favor some and hurt others in that goal.

It has nothing to do with being scared. Nothing to do with hating traditional rivalries. Everything to do with attempting to make each program's road to Atlanta as equal as is possible.

Me liking or disliking playing the Gators is irrelevant to this. I enjoy the game, but would be perfectly fine to see you guys less often if it meant certain other programs saw you more.

Gator fan here. I know our fanbase has mixed feelings on this, as do I. There are pros and cons to it of course. But as a Tiger fan, how do you feel if given the choice?
I think it's a great game, one I've looked forward to for many years. On a personal enjoyment level, I would miss the game if it stopped being played annually.

That said, there are other storied programs in the conference, and the sad truth is that we've expanded too much. Forget about inequalities in scheduling for now; my gripe is that in a 4 year period, you won't have the opportunity to play every school in the conference. That's what really sucks.

LSU never faced UGA with Herschel Walker, or Tennessee with Peyton Manning. That's 2 of the biggest names in college football history, in the same conference, and we as fans missed the chance to see them live.

The league should be working to correct issues like that, not perpetuate them.

Hell no. I don't mind playing Florida, and its been a great series since roughly 2002, but there is no reason for us to play every year. The only reason the game exists is so Bama can play Tennessee and Georgia can play Auburn.

You know what? I don't care about those "rivalries" either.

Breaking news!
LSU has had the easiest schedule in the West over the past 10 years.
West teams that have played the East champs over the past 10 years in the regular season.
LSU 4 times
BAMA 5 times
AUBIE. 7 times

Wow I need to take this to the SEC Rant

My favorite game of the year is the LSU vs UF game. The LSU vs Bama game has gotten more press and head lines, but i love the LSU/UF game. Always a great game and hard hitting. Never want to lose the UF/LSU game.

LOL

So you only go to the uf games? We play UF, AUB, Tamu, and arkansas at home. Thats a pretty damn good slate. And youd only be rotating that uf game with other sec teams. if things change and teams are up and down, then wed always be getting a tough opponent.

Im not worried about florida coming to br so i can watch. Id like to watch us play, uga, vandy, usc, tenn, kentucky, and mizzou.

And of those 5 times, how many did you win bcs championships? 1? And are you counting the sec east champ? because last year i believe 3 eastern divison schools had the same record, and didnt LSU play two of those teams in the regular season while bama played 0. And played 0 2 years in a row.

Actually every year you have won the bcs title, you avoided the east champ in the regular season. Go figure.

Everything goes in cycles. Before spurrier Florida wasn't great but is on a run now just like lsu with Saban. I don't like the permanent opponent anyway but if we have to have one Florida would be my choice.
