My rifle (in front of my eye) likes 180 gr.
My confusion and the start of an argument is Remington Core-Lokt (lead)... or,
Winchester Silvertip. (ballistic)

OB preference?

My rifle is a 700 adl... and both rounds group the same out of it.

Am I just hoping one will do what it is intended for better, or is one preferable over the other?

Both are fine rounds the problem I have with the ballistic silvertip is all the shrapnel it leaves in the meat if you hit a bone. Lost an entire front ham on a hog I shot with one. Those things literally turn meat into jello.

So what are you trying to bring down, what type of results are you looking for? How dead do you want them to be?

That seems to be a preferred whitetail bullet.

180gr may be a bit heavy for whitetail but some may disagree.

I use 165gr FWIW. But then again, both should do the job.

I'm sure it's me, but I miss all over the place with 165 and 150... aim at the same place, just miss... may be mental, but I am more comfortable with 180... especially the two brands I mentioned.
There is no doubt almost anyone on this board can outshoot me, though.

I have been shooting 130gr winchester ballistic silvertips out of my .270 since the mid 90's and have had great success and accuracy. I am going to get into reloading soon and am thinking about using the barnes ttsx bullets. they are solid copper and have damn near 100% weight retention I think they will be my next deer round.

I have yet to have a whitetail walk off from a front shoulder hit of a Core-Lokt. I shoot them in 30-06 and 270.

With a scoped deer rifle, you may have me. I'm too antsy on the trigger.

I just bought some TTSX in 6.5mm to load in 260 Rem. My dad has some amazing loads in 300 Win Mag with them. He tried every Hornady and Nosler bullet on the market and all of them would print fliers on paper. Then it's like he rubbed magic dust on his rifle with the TTSX. He was printing 1/3MOA groups with a 180gr bullet doing about 2950fps. They hit like a sledgehammer.

If you get a bullet and powder combo you want to try, I would be happy to make some loads for you. Just let me know.

i've got some 220 gr remingtons that i've used before. i punched holes thru 3 hogs in one shot at +/-125 yds. kicks a little more but at shorter ranges its fun to know you are throwing one hell of a hunk of lead at them.

IMHO 180gr is too heavy for whitetails down here.

I wouldn't use anything heavier than a 150gr in 30-06 and I can give you about a million reasons to use the 125gr Nosler Ballistic tip but instead of doing it again I'll just post the link to the last time that bullet saved me.
