We had gone three and out on a couple successive drives immediately prior to that. Smith initially sent out the punt team, THEN called time out, then sent his offense back out, and then called a very obvious play that fooled absolutely no one.

Terrible decision making process, terrible decision (even if he had made it, it was a bad decision given the context), and terrible execution.

I actually felt bad for him after that.

watching the game on TV i didn't realy have a problem with the call, of course I'm from the school that says should almost always go for it on 4th down less than 7 or 8. You make some good points and it mihgt have been a bad call. Howver, anyone that thinks that 1 call makes him a bad coach is a flipping moron.

Sooo Payton ranked higher as a coach than Drew ranked as a QB?

Must be the system

Oh, it's not that one play that makes him a terrible coach, that just shows he's weak minded and driven on impulse. It's also the fact that ATL has all the talent in the world, but they lack winners and competitors in 2 major positions - HC and QB.

Remember, I'm also in the camp that says that coaches should go for it more on 4th down, and I still defend Belichick's decision against Indy.

But this one was bad.

Mike Smith is a very good coach who has made a few bad decisions.

Belichick vs Indy was absolutely the right call. Smith was certainly more questionable especially in the full context, which i never really looked at. I may just default to defending coaches that go for it when people rip them after the fact. Also the play that was called could be really bad, undermining the decision to go for it.

all coaches make a few bad decisions of course. Besides Belichick, the Harbaughs and Payton, there aren't many guys I put over Smith.
