Olympus Sails Away - A Proud Day for Shell

quote:

HOUSTON – The Olympus tension leg platform (TLP) has departed the Kiewit Offshore Services yard in Ingleside, Texas, bound for Shell’s Mars field in the Mississippi Canyon area of the Gulf of Mexico.

The 120,000-ton TLP, believed to be the largest ever deployed in the Gulf of Mexico, will be moored in 3,000-ft (914-m) water depths about one mile from the existing Mars platform, which started production in 1996. The new TLP hosts a 24-slot drilling unit and includes capacity for six subsea wells to gather production from the nearby West Boreas and South Diemos fields.

The platform, centerpiece of what Shell has dubbed the Mars B development, has a production capacity of about 100,000 boe/d. The project is expected to extend the field life of Mars to at least 2050

I always tell people that haven't been offshore near the floaters that its almost impossible to explain the massiveness of these things. Well, this does a pretty good job of putting it into perspective

I watched a video of it being towed out that was posted in the OT yesterday, you talk about some serious engineering. It's amazing how they build shite like that.

Keep an eye out for a couple of Chevron deep water rigs that will be hitting the gulf in the near future...Jack & St. Malo and Bigfoot.

The amount of coordination and cooperation and dollars it takes to make shite like that rig happen us pretty mind blowing.

Yep.

I was shocked the first time I saw pictures of a spar with stuff near it to give size perspective:

Equally as impressive IMO is the heavy lift ship that brought part of the structure from Korea to the gulf

That thing is gorgeous. It's like a big tittied woman, I can't take my eyes off of it. I love the name Olympus also.

Top platform names

1. Thunderhorse
2. Olympus
3. Mars
4. Ursa

Went overnight Saturday night to Na Kika area and it was a late change of plans away from Mars/Ursa based on RipCharts and local intel. It turned out to be the best decision of all time as Mars/Ursa area got lit up by a 7 hour lightning storm that would have been a beast to deal with. Did anyone else see this or hear about it? It was the most impressive lightning storm I've ever seen.
