Dual Tight Ends for New Orleans Saints Will Cause Problems for Opponents

From RantSports:

When the New Orleans Saints signed tight end Benjamin Watson in the off-season, fans were thrilled with all of the possibilities a dual tight end system would bring to the explosive offense. There is no question Jimmy Graham is the rising star in the NFL at the tight end position, but giving him Watson to play off of just makes the group that much better. Not to mention, toss in Drew Brees as the quarterback throwing them the ball and all sorts of problems for opponents begin to emerge.

Graham’s numbers dropped off a bit in his third season in the league. With that being said, many that have seen him in the offseason say that he looks to be in the best shape of his life. More importantly, he looks healthy and determined to wreak havoc in 2013. The fact that Brees and Graham have had the entire offseason to work together means fantasy owners should expect a huge year out of the 26-year-old, and that is with Watson on the team.

Speaking of the former New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns tight end, Watson is just one more reason why New Orleans will once again have one of the top offenses in the NFC. He is not a top playmaker like Graham, but he certainly has done enough in his 10-year career for defensive players to keep an eye on him during games. That means that his presence alone will make the offense better.

With defenders constantly staying close to the two tight ends, Brees will be able to exploit the middle of the field. Not to mention, he also will be able to launch deep balls all day long with safeties coming up to grab either Graham or Watson.

I couldn't understand why more weren't excited about Watson. He is in the line of good TE's in the league that aren't elite like Gronk, Graham, and Gonzales. He blocks well, catches well, and knows the game. I thought it was a homerun under the radar signing from day 1.

Watson was one of my favorite signings this offseason. He's got freak athleticism to complement Graham's freak athleticism. Brees is going to go crazy with all the speed we have on offense.

I can honestly say I don't know a ton about Watson, but from what I remember and what I've seen he's always been the definition of solid. I didn't think he was fast though, could be wrong? I remember him being on the much bigger side of TEs though.

Does he have that speed to stretch a D?

I've been saying this in all my random saints discussions lately. I think BW makes the biggest impact of any new player this year. I guess its a little less surprising a claim now that butler is gone.

Look what we did with David f'ing Thomas to the opposite of jimmy graham.

If this guy has anything left in the tank; he could possibly have the best year of his career.

I believe he ran around a 4.5 forty coming out of college and he still has a lot of weight room records for patriot tight ends. He may have lost a step but if he still has any of that athleticism look out

I'n sure his technique will make up for his speed in his treatment of the D.

Maybe stretching isn't even a good idea.
Maybe caressing and stimulating the D without stretching is preferable.

Yeah I think he'll be a pretty huge asset here. I remember seeing him in a few games last year and he was most of what Cleveland had to offer on offense while he was there. He'll be even more effective with defenses focusing in Graham, Sproles, and Colston

He won't be used to stretch defenses, that's Graham's job. Watson will play with the LBs on curls and crossing routes, find the zone and settle down. Graham's job is to get up the seam and for the S or the LB into a high-low situation.

It should be a faptastic combination.

Watsons most valuable role will be in assisting I pass protection IMO.

That too. Until we get the LT situation figured out it wouldn't surprise me if we primarily used him in pass pro.

I thought it was the factory of sadness.

Palace makes it sound like sadness merely resides there, while I get the impression that they manufacture their sadness there.

And let's not forget his value in the run game.

It would be a good sign if we actually ran more 2 TE sets, it would help our running game for sure with extra blockers and the threat of either TE being able to catch the ball.
