@HuntPalmerBBI: I'm told LSU signee Nick Longhi has signed with the Red Sox.

I don't think he ever intended on coming to LSU.

I think we were just unlucky. Boston signed a few guys cheap and didn't sign a couple other guys so they had plenty to work with on signing Longhi. Sucks. Pretty big loss for this class.

Yeah, heard this was pretty much a done deal. I'm disappointed.

Anyone know how much he signed for? If he got 2nd-3rd round money can't really fault him in leaving.

All of this. I really thought we were getting a steal when he fell to the 30th.

I'm guessing it had to be at least 700K. Knowing how much they had and what his worth could be in 3 years, anything less would be a travesty.

From what I had read, Boston was approx. 875K under their budget, so they were definitely able to sign him for WAY more than 30th round money. Can't blame the kid.

Idk how he could even think of doing this after what Bregs said about how the LSU experience is worth turning down 1st round money

Each pick is slotted but every dollar you pay under slot for one pick can be paid to other picks.

The team's pool is determined by the slot value of their picks in the top 10 rounds. Everyone after round 10 has a value of 100k. This amount isn't included in the pool, but if someone signs for more than 100 then the excess counts against the pool. They have to sign the picks in the top 10 rounds to retain the value in their pool. They can't just let them go unsigned and roll all the money into a handful of players.

Boston signed their 8th, 9th, and 10th round picks for $10,000 each...so they saved money there. They saved some money on their #1 pick and a few others.

They took two players more highly regarded than Longhi outside the top 10 rounds after they dropped due to injury and signability. Those two turned the offer down, so then they offered the "savings" to Longhi. His excess bonus amount over 100k will count against their pool, but they have room for it.

Thanks for the explanation, but now I have another question. Who the frick signs for 10k a year if they are picked in the top 10 rounds.

I don't know anything about those 3 in particular but you see more seniors drafted in the top 10 rounds now than you used to because they can be signed for peanuts and the savings can be used elsewhere. For example Katz signed for 95 in the 4th round and the Cardinals saved over 300k.

Seniors that used to be taken in rounds 11-25ish are now taken earlier, but signed for the same amount.

Wow. In the 30th round? Some kids just don't understand what is in front of them.

I get that everyone is different but shite man, that late? He is making a mistake and it sucks but it is what it is I guess.

Didn't anyone watch Moneyball? The money goes away fast.

But if you pay above slot, based on percentages, you suffer losses like tax penalties (large ones) and losing top round draft picks for next season, correct? Or is that just for the top ten rounds?

That's only if you exceed your pool amount. Any money you save from your pool amount can go towards paying anyone.

So basically they have just found a loophole. Why not just have a fair min/max to each slot.

If a bonus from round 11 onward exceeds $100,000, it will count towards the allotted budget, meaning a team could get itself into trouble with penalties despite when the pick was made.

As of now, they have 28 total unsigned picks, including a 4th rounder and the remaining amount they can spend without penalty is 1.3MM on ALL of them.

So that is a little better. Even though, the Red Sox are filthy. They purposely draft NCAA Seniors and sign them for peanuts because they don't have an negotiating leverage.

Example, they drafted Kyle Kraus was drafted in the 7th round in 2012 and signed for $1,000. Mike Miller,9th round in 2012, signed for $5,000. It is a shitty way to do business but they have found a way to sign everyone they draft.

Furthermore, they signed their 8th, 9th, and 10th rounders in 2013 for $10,000 each.
