‘The Division’ and ‘The Crew’ Will Have an Always-Online Requirement

Speaking with Eurogamer on the subject, Ubisoft has confirmed the existence of this feature due to the structure of the two titles.
“The Division will be always-online, because this is how the game is designed. It’s a world that’s always on and always living. The fact you’re always-online is a must. It’s the same for The Crew. You can join your friends or not, but something is happening in this world all the time.”
“We believe these kind of experiences are great. You can go on playing while not in your living room. You can use your tablet or smartphone to enrich your character or help your character and friends while you’re away.
“We give the possibility for the gamer to always be in contact with these worlds. This is something that is completely new and refreshing.”

Ubisoft doesn't care about the soldiers overseas and the poor people with no internet!

I don't really have a problem with always-on. I may not completely understand it, either. Don't I have to be connected to the internet to play the BF3 campaign? Is that what that is?

there is just one "world". just because you turn the game off, the game world you play in with your character is still "existing" as other people are also playing.
You can also apparently do stuff thru mobile apps when away from your actual console.
you have to be ONLINE to connect to the world. Similar to World of Warcraft or any other MMO
there is no offline content.

But, the game won't let you access it if you're not connected even if you don't want to play "online", right? Basically, it's the game that says it's always-on. Not the console.

Serious question, how hard are games like this to play by yourself. I'm assuming there is no SP campaign but can do I need a group to play?

Sounds like it.
You don't have to keep your console on, but if you are playing you must be connected to the internet.
So is The Division solely an FPSMMO?

Well I'm done with gaming now
This is why EA did away with online passes and why Sony said they are leaving DRM requirements up to publishers. This is only the first step but DRM will become standard under the guise "you need to be connected to experience everything in the game" then when everyone is OK with that they will move in to do away with the trade in market.
No one "won" when Xbox changed their DRM policy as it's still coming.

i suspect this game will be 100x more fun with friends and a group, yes
probably still very fun solo.

I figure it is but I have never had time to commit to gaming with a group. I get the time when I get the time ya know.

I feel the same way

without knowing any details, i suspect there will be content for a solo casual player, and a more commited 4 man group, for instance.
tougher and more rewarding missions.
and, based on proximity and the always online world, you will probably run into other random people doing the same missions as you, creating the MMO experience, even if they arent a "set" group of friends

That's why I wish games like BF3 and CoD didn't have campaigns. It's wasted space and time. Nobody plays those games for a campaign. Maybe the campaigns set the locations for maps and such, but hell...all they would need to do is say "Battle in today's modern military conflict zones as the USMC or Opposing Force" and you'd really have it covered.

Although possible, I don't think this proves that.
Without knowing everything about the game except for what they showed at E3, the always online example in Division seems to stem from the type of game it is. There is basically no SP, it seem like and MMOFPS, similar to Destiny.
I don't know much about The Crew tho.

All I played on bf3 was the campaign but I know what you mean. I didn't pay a lot for it so it didn't bother me. I have never played an mmo so this one may be the first.

Not really, some people just want to play a military game single player style and be done with it.
Ubisoft has already gone down the DRM train with Uplay on PC. They reversed some of it due to backlash but people are naive to think the big publishers like EA and Ubisoft have just given up on it. They will find a way to get everyone on board with it.
