Our defensive line this year will surprise some people. Although it doesn't have as much proven experience, it is filled with unproven talent. We all know what Freak and Rasco can do, along with Ego. The starting four will be Hunter, Freak, Ego, and Rasco. Danielle Hunter will be a force with his pass rush ability. Also Allen at DE and Quentin Thomas at DT will both provide the line with back up experience. Ronnie Feist will also be a key back up at DE.

Now with the younger guys. Mickey Johnson will see playing time at DT with a solid 2 years under his belt to prepare. Patterson is honestly the only true freshman I see us red shirting. Every other true freshman defensive lineman will see lots of meaningful playing time IMO. I see us playing Beckwith at DE this year because of the surplus of talent at LB. Gilmore and LaCouture will be monsters at DT. Herron will be as advertised at DE and I think Bower will surprise some people early on.

To wrap things up; the lack of depth may worry some people. But the defensive line will be excellent in my opinion. The entire defense and, for that matter, the entire team's success will largely depend on how the defensive line plays. I trust Chief and Coach Brick to have these guys ready to dominate. Should be an exciting season.

Who do you guys think will be the fourth DT? Freak, Ego, Thomas and.......

Worried about Mickey being too short with short arms. Like what I've seen from Lacouture in the spring.

You can't expect freshman to come in and produce in the SEC at DLine. Very few could actually do that get you expect 6-7 of our guys to be productive?
Maybe they will have strength in numbers and maybe they will have good games against small schools. I highly doubt that they will have decent to great success against Bama, UF and UGA. They just haven't been in the weight room or coached long enough. There are so many small things they have to learn and master.
The best thing we can hope for is that our offense can stay on the field long enough, each game, to give our D a break. We also need our LB's and secondary to play strong so our DLine can focus on the run.
I'm not saying 1-3 of the guys won't be decent but to expect them to just step in and reload is setting the bar unrealistically to high. These are 18 year olds going up against 20-23 year olds with a Ton of experience and time in a college weight program.

How can you say Hunter is a starter when Allen has been mostly running with the ones?
I'm all for Hunter exploding with pass rush potential, but he didn't have a very good spring by all accounts. Hope he (and the freshman in general) really step it up.
LSU has always counted in being able to rotate and spell the starters on a regular basis without much drop off, that's what wears on the lesser teams so much. Hopefully we can continue to do so

Freak, Ego, Mickey, and Thomas have all been in the program for at least 1 year at DT. Rasco, Allen, Hunter, Maclin, and Feist have all been in the program for at least 1 year at DE. If only 1 of Bower, Herron, Neal, Patterson, Gilmore, Bain, LaCouture step up, we will have plenty of depth and will still be able to rotate talented fresh guys like we always do. Do the research before you freak out.

Best 28th post evah!!!

Seriously, broseph, I'm with you. Until a Les Miles team just absolutely goes out and lays an egg, and until he quits hiring solid coordinators, I'ma assume we'll be in the natty talks up until the Alabama game. We've beat them about as many times as they've beat us (I know all of wins didn't count, but still), and I'ma go into every season thinking we are one of the 6 or 8 teams that have a shot.

Plus, the recruiting juggernaut that is Les Miles, and the talent in La over the next couple of years, there's reason to think otherwise.

I hope this proves to be true. I also really like our staters But agree with an earlier post that expecting true Frosh to step into a back up role in "the trenches" may be to much to ask where strength and advanced skill comes with experience. And our other back ups have hardly yet seen the field.

Remember how everyone was so high on Freak Johnson coming in as a true Frosh? He was humbled pretty quickly that year. Now he is pre-season All American going into his Jr year. Even the best recruits need time and experience in the interior line.

We actually have much more quality depth this year as the OP mentions all but Bain. We have massive depth at both DL and DE, just most are not experienced however very talented.

Watch for T Bower, Beckwith, and possibly Herron at DE to bring much needed quality depth to help Rasco and Co.

In the middle we will be fine with 2 great starters and MJ & QT in the system for a couple of years with Gilmore, Bain, and LeCout provided 3rd level depth till one emerges on 2nd team.

We will be fine. More depth than last year

4 of these guys could be starting as FR at most D1 schools outside of the SEC. (Herron, Gilmore, Bain, LaCouture).

I'm with the OP, this DL will beast it up to the surprise of most.

Freak and Rasco both had solid season as TrFr. There are a couple of freshmen D-linemen that will have the opportunity to earn snaps this season.

Lacoture will defenitely be in the rotation. The odds are with the numbers the tigers signed last class that Herron, Bower, Gilmore or a couple of the others will see the field on the DL.
