1. The lighter ball made for better serve volley. When they slowed serve down it took the uniqueness away and to me baseline slugfest are boring

2. Lack of American success makes it not as an important view. While the players are still great and talented, I'm not as interested.

3. No real developed story to follow. The Joker going for consecutives is a great story, the fall of Fed and Nadal made me, notice I said me, lose interest.

4. ESPN not hating on them, but I think their coverage at times gets in the way of itself. I remember watching HBO daily for coverage then NBC weekends.

5. Equipment changes. The increase of technology makes it more of baseline and non creative. It seems all you want now is great top spin and big forehand. Some creativity, in my opinion, has been lost.

#2 is the biggest problem why it isn't exciting.

I wouldn't miss when McEnroe played. Sampras and Agassi kept my attention. After those 2, I don't give a rat's arse anymore.

Turn on the Tennis Channel right now and watch this epic match between Del/NOVAK. A GREAT MATCH...IF you just like good tennis,,,

BTW The americans SUCK at tennis cause most kids don't have an interest in it cause of fricking staying inside and playing video games, playing on the computer, or playing with their phone............ FACT.... Its TOO HARD for this generation of kids. SAD..........

I like to watch those old matches on the Tennis Channel. You're right, it's a power game today, plain and simple. The other night there was a Connors / Borg match. A night or two after it was Goolagong v Tracy Austin. The talent is amazing today but I do miss the old game.

Do you really think that is the problem and not the fact that kids in the United States participate in Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Golf, Wrestling, Hockey, and so forth?

Please keep in mind that we have numerous tennis academies scattered all throughout the country.

Tennis is extremely hard to make it in the professional level.

so is that why we have no basketball, baseball or football players also?

Tough call. Delpo/Novak today was probably one of the top five matches I've ever seen. Yet, I did feel like the Novak/Rafa Aussie final a few years ago was bordering on what some call "PED-aided wallball."

Some people say the court surfaces have become homogenized:

I wish Wimbledon was still fast like the '90's so we would have a bunch of what happened in the first week.

I'm not crazy about what the string technology is doing.

Anyway, in my perfect world I would ban poly strings. Yet, in my perfect world, these guys would probably be playing with wood. It's just a different game. You're going to have marathons with defenders like Novak, Murray, and Rafa. You just hope other guys have enough variety to keep the sport from becoming the Tour de France.

I may be in the minority but to me a serve volley match is more enjoyable to watch. I always thought you had to set your opponent up with a great serve. If you're serve was wrong then you had to hope you didn't get a Slazenger logo implant.

I have to state I think Sampras was the greatest player of last 50 years. So my opinion is slanted towards his playing style.

Good article Bunk.

There's no denying the change has been monstrous. It's the reason I still say Borg is the greatest tennis player of all-time, and nothing will ever change that. As mentioned in the artice, the Wimbledon-French back-to-back he won was a staggering, seemingly impossible feat. Now, it's nice, but it's nothing eart-shattering.

I also agree that I can see why they did it. Some say they like seeing all the upsets, I surely don't. I don't mind 1 or 2 medium upsets, but I like getting to see the top players each major, regardless of surface conditions. I also have always enjoyed the French defensive, heavyweight points over Wimbledon's 3 pump-chump points.

Lastly, I think for a sport that's not fanatically followed, it helps to have consistent recognition of players in your major matches. Can you imagine how popular tennis would be in the US had there been Sampras/Agassi or Connors/McEnroe in an era where the top 4 were pretty much destined to make the semis each tournament?

Also, unreal match by DelPo and Djoker. DelPo's forehand is the equivalent of being a Nate Robinson dunker IMO. Sure it would probably be better if you gave me Curry's shot or Howard's size or James' strength just like I'd be better with Sampras' serve, Nadal's speed or Djoker's return, but if you gave me the ability to unleash one of those things Idk if I'd be able to turn it down. That thing is fvcking insane.

I'm not a die hard tennis but I have been waking up earlier to watch Wimbledon and I always watch the us open. The upsets were good for tennis in my opinion because the game has gotten so predictable and that gets me less excited. Is there any good American talent coming up the men's rank?

Question did you enjoy watching Lendl play? I thought he was a machine and for him to totally reconstruct his game to attempt to win one tourney was interesting. If he played in today's conditions then he gets his Wimbledon, IMO.

I would agree with Pete as #1, probably followed by Borg & Federer.

Go on youtube and pull up the 1998 Wimby final between Sampras and Ivanisevic. Watch it.

Then answer me this. Which was more exciting:
1. That match, or
2. Today's match between Delpo and Djoker

If you come back and you answer #1, then you're either lying or you're a huge baseball fan. I'm not sure what's worse.

Serve and volley nostalgia is funny. The game had become borderline unwatchable, and now everybody gets warm fuzzies talking about the good old days of the serve and volley. Put those warm fuzzies back in your pants. The game is better now. Watching serve-bot tennis sucked. The tennis was bad, and you, good sir, should feel bad.

Rather watch Sampras over Djockavich or Del Potro "good sir".

Just because somebody has a different opinion of what great tennis is doesn't mean they're wrong.

I find baseline tennis boring.

If I wanted to watch Jose Luis Clerc clones I would enjoy it I suppose.

No no no.

1. Racquet technology helped the servers. It gave us 20 years of uninteresting serve-bot Wimbledon's where Mark fricking Phillippoussis -- who is terrible at the game of tennis; basically Milos Raonic -- makes it multiple finals.

Funk dat.

2. Poly strings swung the pendulum back to the returners. It allows players to better control 130 mph serves, and thus return serves. And when a serve is returned, what happens. frickING TENNIS HAPPENS.

Ban poly strings and welcome to Milos Raonic, 9 time wimbledon champion. Kick me in the dick.

I find two hours of service winners boring.

Call me not weird. Enjoy the rest of the baseball season.

If great tennis is simply great serving, then, sorry dude, you're just wrong.

If you wanna talk Johnny Mac artistry, sure that was great tennis. But that wasn't the way things were evolving. It was Goran Ivanisevic, Mark Phillipoussis tennis. Serve-bot tennis. No other skill. Just serve.

They changed the grass at Wimby in 2001 for a good reason. Because watching Milos Raonic win grand slams is a travesty to all mankind.

They made the right decision.
