That was uncomfortable to listen too.

I wonder if all of the spying revelations are going to impact their recruitment?

A friendly reminder-

They can lie to us but it is against the law for us to lie to them.

This is a reddit post on r/Anarcho_capitalism on the same link. Seems pretty relevant.

This is a big problem in general for the intelligence agencies, particularly now. If their actions appear morally illegitimate, they're only going to be able to attract a combination of amoral intelligent people (who can earn more in the private sector), idiots, and sadists.

It sounds like a cool idea to hire a bunch of psychopaths for your secret police, but the problem is that they'll just take the first $5m offer from a Chinese agent to hand over documents. If your job requires an immoral or amoral sensibility, there's not very much preventing you from betraying the agency. If the person DOES have a moral sensibility, they may just leak to the press or drag their feet.

The theoretical superman that the republic needs (that I've read about) is the so-called 'patriotic psychopath' who will do anything necessary for the state. These are in fairly short supply, and that particular mindset may not even really exist. Something like patriotism requires a moralistic sensibility and tribe loyalty. If your job requires that you violate your tribe loyalty and/or your morality then you will defect or malinger.

That's gonna make for an interesting workplace.

That's a difficult predicament. If they hire moral people, they won't want to spy on Americans. If they hire amoral people they're at risk of defecting.

They essentially have to behave themselves to attract the right people to the job, and they aren't. I guess we get to look forward to more leaks.

Plenty of these out there, but most probably do not have the qualifications needed for the job.

I listened to that yesterday and it's just hard to believe that the NSA folks were so seemingly caught off guard, didn't think on their feet, and were completely inept with regard to answering questions. It's easy: "I'm here on a recruitment trip, the NSA does not share every bit of information or intel as my purpose is recruitment. While your questions are certainly valid, my role in the organization doesn't allow me to speak from a place of knowledge on the issues you've raised."

Actually, that sounds like a completely prepared response to me. I think they handled themselves well. She's not a press agent for the NSA and shouldn't be expected to answer every question. If it's relevant to the job recruitment process, sure, but if those little idealists want to bitch and moan about civil rights, they should go through their congressmen.

Ah, to be in college again.
