Newborn parenting (Self sooth or Pick them up all the time?)

What did you/are you doing? I'll have a newborn here in a few months.

My brother-in-law and his wife always tend to the baby and feed the baby all day long, always hold etc when she cries.

My wife and I plan on letting them cry it out etc because our niece is a nightmare as far as crying is concerned. We feel it's because they never put her down.

Now, I don't know the science on this issue and haven't read much. This is a good place to get different opinions.

Do this early and often:

quote:

My brother-in-law and his wife always tend to the baby and feed the baby all day long, always hold etc when she cries.

And you won't have to worry about this later:

quote:

My wife and I plan on letting them cry it out etc because our niece is a nightmare as far as crying is concerned.

I'm hoping it goes well and I can get some sleep.

Always rocked our little one to sleep. Whenever we tried cry-it-out, he threw up within 5 mins. We are still trying to sleep train, but crying won't be involved.

Like someone else mentioned, make sure all the baby's needs have been met(fed, clean diaper, etc). Then let them cry it out.

Mine will be 5 months next week. I've managed to sleep very well the last 5 months for the most part. I'm actually with him now and letting the wife sleep in another bedroom this evening for much needed rest. He sleeps from 9p to around 6a these days.

You got to hold them and soothe them as newborns. You aren't affecting behavior you are addressing biology. They lack the ability to self soothe at less than 3 months of age. After that, we cry it out.

Also, I am typing this on my phone holding a 1 month old, my three year old is putting himself to sleep. Like A Boss!

My wife and I agreed that cry it out didn't sit well with either of us.

Why would you let a baby cry when you could love them?

We spent a lot of sleepless nights - 2 kids - but it was worth it. I think spoiled kids come from spoiled parents. Has nothing to do with letting them cry or being held.

Expect the worst.

Our first got into a good routine after not too long.

Our second slept through the night after about a month. For a few nights. Then not again for a year.
