re: Just finished watching 'Lost' (Spoilers)

The show was a novel idea and well written but it was just too much to wrap up neatly. Fans of the show were able to get past the need for a nice tidy wrap up and enjoyed the show for what it was. Subsequent articles and interviews with writers have filled the backstory in to their satisfaction. Personally, I found it frustrating and manipulative and finally bailed before the last couple of seasons.

Can anyone explain the "Tailies" - the folks at the back of the plane who didn't really belong there?
